Week 5: ‘I share with others’

AT SCHOOL

Sharing with others is an important way we live out the value of responsibility in our school community. Responsibility means thinking about the needs of others, caring for the people around us and making positive choices that help everyone feel included and supported. When students share their time, ideas and kindness, they demonstrate respect, empathy and teamwork. Sharing helps to build strong friendships, encourages cooperation, and creates a welcoming environment where everyone has the opportunity to learn and succeed together.

AT HOME

Parents can support the value of responsibility and sharing at home in many simple but meaningful ways. Encouraging children to share with siblings, help with household jobs and take turns during games and activities helps build empathy and cooperation. Families can model responsible behaviour by showing kindness, listening to others and discussing the importance of helping those around us.

Week 6: 'I use strategies to regulate emotions'

AT SCHOOL

In Week 6, students will focus on the value of resilience by learning how to use strategies to self-regulate their emotions and behaviours. Self-regulation helps children remain calm, make positive choices and manage challenges in a respectful and safe way. Students will practise strategies such as deep breathing, positive self-talk, taking a break and speaking to a trusted adult when needed.

AT HOME

Parents can support this learning at home by encouraging children to talk about their feelings, modelling calm responses and practising simple calming strategies together. By working in partnership, we can help students build resilience and develop lifelong skills to manage emotions positively.

MHIPS at Stella Maris

Stella Maris has been selected to participate in the Mental Health in Primary Schools Initiative (MHIPS) through Melbourne University. This is an exciting opportunity for our school community as we continue to strengthen and support the wellbeing of all students. As part of this initiative, Angela has been appointed as the MHIPS Leader and will work alongside staff, students and families to help embed positive mental health practices across the school.

MHIPS is a Victorian Government initiative designed to build the capacity of schools to better support student mental health and wellbeing. The program focuses on promoting positive mental health, early intervention and creating safe and supportive learning environments where every child can thrive socially, emotionally and academically.

Throughout the year, the initiative will involve professional learning for staff, student wellbeing programs, opportunities for student voice and partnerships with families and external services. The timeline will include planning and consultation phases, staff training, implementation of wellbeing practices and ongoing review to ensure the needs of our students and community are being supported.

What this may look like at Stella Maris includes:

  • explicit teaching of wellbeing and emotional regulation strategies
  • student wellbeing check-ins and support programs
  • opportunities for students to build resilience, confidence, and positive relationships
  • staff professional learning focused on mental health and wellbeing
  • collaboration with families to strengthen home and school partnerships

We look forward to working together as a community to support the wellbeing and success of every student through this important initiative.
