Secondary School

It has been a huge week in Secondary School. Two of our biggest events of the year, the Whole School Athletics Carnival and Valedictory, were crammed into the same week, providing a big send-off for our Year Twelve students. The Year Twelves also had their final House meeting and last day of school, which included a very entertaining water fight.

On Monday this week, our new Year Eleven leaders hosted their first assembly, and we heard from our new Sport, Community and Service and Arts Captains, along with our Captain of Boarding, as they set the tone for what’s to come throughout the rest of the term.

In our younger years, students recently took part in an interschool cricket carnival, with both the girls’ and boys’ teams doing incredibly well. In fact, in one of the boys’ games, they scored more than 300 runs in an eight-over innings! I think the Aussie Test team could learn a thing or two!

On Wednesday, our Year Nine students took part in a Career Taster Day organised by Mrs O’Donnell in conjunction with South Regional TAFE, which also included a visit to UWA Albany. It was a great day, and the Year Nine students represented the school well.

Our Year Eleven Outdoor Education students are currently walking the Bibbulmun Track for their expedition assessment, starting at the southern terminus and making their way to Mutton Bird Beach. We wish them well on their journey.

Boarding Valedictory Dinner

Last Thursday evening, we had the privilege of hosting the Boarding Valedictory Dinner in the newly refurbished Hall to celebrate the graduating Class of 2026. The evening was filled with recollections of boarding memories, special moments, and reflections on the students' journeys.

We heard from our two Boarding Captains, enjoyed a heartfelt parent response from Alaina Smith, and were treated to a live acoustic performance from Esther Barrett-Lennard as we sat back and enjoyed a slideshow featuring "then and now" photos of our graduating students.

Overall, the evening was another tremendous success. It is always a special occasion to host families and have the opportunity to express our appreciation for choosing GSG Boarding, while also celebrating the success of their boarding journeys with us. A big thank you must go to all who helped make the night possible, particularly the catering team and hospitality class for providing incredible service another memorable meal.

Human Biology Midwife Visit

During Week Nine of last term, midwife and lactation consultant Hayley Christidis visited both Year Eleven Human Biology classes to give an information session about pregnancy and birth. Currently in Year Eleven Human Biology, we are learning about foetal development, healthy pregnancy and childbirth. Having Hayley visit was very interesting and relevant because she spoke about topics such as hormones, stages of labour and different methods of childbirth.

Hayley demonstrated the process of childbirth using a silicone birthing model, talking us through the dilation of the cervix, crowning of the baby’s head, rotation of the baby and the best birthing positions for a smoother delivery. The funniest part was watching Jess and Stella try to deliver a baby through the model, although it was also quite confronting seeing childbirth up close.

Hayley was very friendly and happy to answer any of our burning questions, no matter how silly they were. Thanks so much to Hayley Christidis for taking time out of your day to visit us. We really appreciated the wealth of knowledge and experience you brought to our class.
