Influenza A Outbreak: Important Health Update for Our School Community
Our school is currently experiencing an outbreak of Influenza A, with a significant number of students and staff members affected over the past two weeks. I'm writing to inform you about the symptoms, treatment options, and preventive measures to help protect our school community.
What We're Seeing:
Influenza A is a highly contagious respiratory illness that spreads rapidly in school environments through droplets from coughing, sneezing, and close contact. The virus can also survive on surfaces for several hours, making frequent hand hygiene essential.
Symptoms to Watch For:
Students infected with Influenza A typically experience:
- Sudden onset of high fever (38-40°C)
- Severe body aches and muscle pain
- Persistent dry cough
- Headache
- Extreme fatigue and weakness
- Sore throat
- Chills and sweats
Some children may also experience nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
Symptoms usually appear 1-4 days after exposure and can last 5-7 days, though fatigue may persist for several weeks.
Treatment and Management:
If your child develops flu symptoms:
- Keep them home from school until they have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without medication
- Ensure plenty of rest and fluids
- Paracetamol or ibuprofen can help manage fever and aches (always follow age-appropriate dosing)
- Consult your GP, especially if symptoms worsen or your child has underlying health conditions
Antiviral medications may be prescribed in severe cases or for high-risk individuals
When to Seek Urgent Medical Attention:
Please seek immediate medical care if your child experiences:
- Difficulty breathing or rapid breathing
- Chest pain
- Persistent high fever despite medication
- Severe dehydration (dry lips, reduced urination, dizziness)
- Confusion or drowsiness
Symptoms that improve then suddenly worsen
Prevention Measures:
To help contain the outbreak, we ask families to:
- Keep unwell children at home
- Practice frequent handwashing with soap and water
- Cough and sneeze into elbows, not hands
Avoid sharing drink bottles, food, or utensils
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school community healthy. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact myself or the Administration team.
Stay well,
