Mission Day:
Last Friday as a school, we celebrated the important role we have as ‘Missionaries’ through the activities, fundraising etc we participate in on Mission Day. The day started with a beautiful Prayer Gathering by Deb’s grade 2 class reminding us about what Mission Day is all about. We learnt about Yamikani who has a disability and needs to walk a long way to get to school each day. Catholic Mission is working with his community to make schooling more accessible for children like Yamikani. The children were reminded that even though we were having a day of fun and celebration, each coin that they handed over on Mission Day was a gesture of hope and peace that would spread far beyond our little St. Mary’s community. Thank you to all the children who organised stalls, the staff who assisted and the parents and community for joining in our celebration. It was a wonderful day to share with the whole school community.
Laudato Si Action Planning:
On Tuesday of this week, the staff were led by DOBCEL staff member Sarah Page through the reflection stage of our Laudato Si Action Goal. Next year, we will use this reflection to begin planning a school action that aligns with the goals in Laudato Si
All Saints and All Souls
This Sunday the 1st of November commemorates ‘All Saint’s’ feast day, which is a day that honours all the saints of the church and the next day, Monday the 2nd, is All Souls day which is a day to remember all faithfully departed baptized christians. These feast days are important to think about and discuss particularly as some of our children may be excited about ‘Halloween’ celebrations around town. The significance of these feast days and the connection to Halloween is a great discussion/learning point for children as ‘Halloween’ actually came from a contracted form of ‘All Hallows’ Eve’, meaning the evening preceding ‘All Saints’ Day. So as children are enjoying their trick or treating on Halloween, be sure to make the connection to the feast days of ‘All Saints’ and ‘All Souls’ as the traditional Christian celebrations.
