Year 9/10 Art – Haida-Inspired Lino Prints

The Year 9/10 Art students have been getting stuck into printmaking, creating their own animal artworks inspired by the bold shapes, flowing lines and distinctive style of Haida art. 

Students started by designing an animal using simplified shapes and patterns, before transferring their design onto a lino block. They then tackled the tricky process of carving a two-layer reduction lino print.

The students carved and printed their first layer in red ink, then carefully carved into the same lino block again before printing their second layer over the top in black. This was definitely a process that required some planning, patience and careful carving – once the lino is carved away, there’s no going back! 

There has been plenty of experimenting along the way, with students learning how to line up their layers, create interesting shapes and make their animal designs really stand out.

The finished prints are looking fantastic, with each student bringing their own ideas and creativity to the project. It has been great to see students challenge themselves with a new printmaking technique and develop their skills and own personal style along the way.
