Students can choose a MAXIMUM of two electives from this Learning Area. 

MUSIC

Students choose one of two streams: Performance or Technology

MUSIC PERFORMANCE 

Course Description:        

Year 10 Music Performance is designed for students who are passionate about music and eager to refine their skills in preparation for VCE Music Performance or VCE VET Music. Focusing on group contexts, students will develop their practical music abilities, enhance their aural comprehension, and learn to effectively organize sound for live performances. 

 

Throughout the course, students will work collaboratively to design and present engaging group performances that showcase their musicality and performance skills. They will also practice prepared technical work, develop aural skills, and analyze selected works to deepen their understanding of various musical contexts, influences, characteristics, and styles, in alignment with VCE and VCE VET Music tasks. 

  

Assessment:                      

This subject uses the following methods of assessment: 

  • Folio – Performance Works & Rehearsals 
  • Technical Assessment - Scales and Chords 
  • Examinations – Aural skills and Music Analysis   

Pathway:                             

This course is highly recommended for students considering VCE Music Performance or VCE VET Music Units 1 & 2, and provides an excellent foundation for pursuing careers in music performance, sound production, music creation, or music business.  

 

Special Requirements: 

Students are expected to have prior instrumental or vocal experience, such as private lessons or successful completion of Year 9 music studies. 

MUSIC TECHNOLOGY  

Course Description:        

Year 10 Music Technology is designed for students who want to explore the world of music creation and production through the use of various technologies. Students will gain hands-on experience with microphones, MIDI keyboards, and digital audio software while working individually or in groups to develop their skills in music composition and production. 

 

Throughout the course, students will hone their creative listening skills by focusing on the elements of music, including an awareness of various electronic music genres. They will learn to solve compositional challenges from beginning to end, enhancing their current musical skills for composition and performance purposes. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to discover or further develop their abilities to play, sing, create demo recordings, and use technical equipment to record and transform sound for captivating performances and presentations.

  • Folio – of compositions and recordings 
  • Practical Assessment – live or recorded performance 

Pathway:                             

This course is highly recommended for students considering VCE VET Music Units 1 & 2, and provides a solid foundation for pursuing careers in music performance, sound production, music creation, or music business.  

 


PRODUCTION SKILLS (Semester 1 only)

Production Skills in Year 10 offers a comprehensive exploration of theatre production, catering to students with an interest in either performance or backstage production. Students will deepen their understanding and skills in acting, directing, and technical aspects such as set design, costume creation, prop management, and lights and sound operation. This elective ensures students will be well-prepared for VCE Theatre Studies while fostering a supportive environment for students to pursue their passions in our annual school production.


THEATRE STUDIES

Course Description:        

In this subject, students will explore, through a series of workshops, the cutting-edge world of eclectic theatre. Students will be exploring conventions from some of the most contemporary performances in the world today. They will have the opportunity to create their own performances and develop skills in devising non-naturalistic performances. Furthermore, students who select this elective will devise their own play to perform in front of an audience at the end of the unit. 

 

Assessment:                      

This subject uses the following methods of assessment: 

  • Ensemble workshops 
  • Analysis of a Live Performance 
  • Performance of a devised play 

Pathway:                             

It is strongly recommended that students considering VCE Drama Units 1 & 2 should select this subject. 

 

Special Requirements:     

Students will be required to attend a live performance as an incursion or excursion.
