THEATRE STUDIES 

Units 1 & 2

 

Course Description:   

This study enables students to: 

  • acquire knowledge of theatre, including its styles, traditions, purposes and audiences 
  • interpret playscripts through engagement in the production process 
  • creatively and imaginatively explore and experiment with theatrical possibilities 
  • develop and apply stagecraft knowledge and skills to interpret playscripts 
  • develop an understanding of themselves as theatre makers and practitioners 
  • develop an appreciation of theatre and its significance as an art form 
  • apply skills of theatrical analysis and evaluation to their own production work and that of others 
  • participate in the theatrical life of their community. 

The study is made up of two units: 

  • Unit 1: Pre-modern Theatre 
  • Unit 2: Modern Theatre 

Assessment:                     

Consists of the following: 

  • Performances - Ensemble and Solo 
  • Folios of Production Processes and Stagecraft which can include multimedia presentations. 
  • Exams - Written and Performance 
  • Performance analyses  

Expected Skills:                

Students are to demonstrate performance skills and critically analyse production elements and performances. 

 

Special Course Commitments: 

Students are required to attend performances outside school hours. This will be an extra cost to subject fees, dependent on the show, location and timing.

VCE VET MUSIC (CERTIFICATE III IN MUSIC)  

 

Units 1, 2, 3 & 4 Course Description:    Our VCE VET Music program, in partnership with COSAMP (RTO 41549), offers an engaging and hands-on approach to learning within the music industry at Wheelers Hill Secondary College. Students will participate in competency-based training and assessment, earning a study score that contributes to their ATAR. This Certificate III qualification is perfect for those who want to develop their talents in performance, composition, and recording. 

 

Throughout this course, you will dive into practical music skills, enhance your performance abilities, explore songwriting fundamentals, learn arranging techniques, and discover the world of music production. These valuable competencies will broaden your employment opportunities within the music industry and provide a recognised qualification to help guide your future career and vocational choices. 

 

In Units 1 and 2, you will create a music demo, compose simple songs or musical pieces, and develop your ensemble skills. Units 3 and 4 offer scored assessments covering topics such as improvisation skills, performance preparation, and group performances. VCE credit includes recognition of two units at Units 1 and 2 level and at least one Units 3 and 4 sequence. 

 

Expected Skills:                 

We highly recommend completing Year 10 Music Performance or Music Technology before diving into this subject. To kick-start your journey in the Certificate III, you will need a foundational understanding of music concepts and some proficiency on your chosen instrument. 

 

Special Course Commitments:    

All students are expected to undertake private tuition on their chosen instrument or voice through the College Instrumental Music program or a private teacher/music school. In addition to classroom learning, you'll have opportunities to showcase your talent at college functions (e.g., Open Night, Assemblies) and participate in a school ensemble or program (e.g., Choir, Concert Band, Musical Production).
