What's Happening in Grade 4?

We are excited to share a snapshot of the exciting activities and learning that will be taking place in the Grade 4 classrooms.
This term, our literacy learning will focus on two different types of writing: explanation texts and procedural texts. We will begin by exploring explanation writing, where students will learn how to explain how or why something happens by organising information clearly. In the second half of the term, we will shift our focus to procedural writing. Students will learn how to write clear, step-by-step instructions. Our reading and writing will also connect with our Inquiry learning in Physical and Chemical Science, giving students meaningful opportunities to apply their literacy skills across the curriculum.
Mathematics
Students will be developing proficiency in multiplication and related division facts, exploring a range of strategies to efficiently solve problems involving larger numbers. They will be using arrays and other visual models to represent multiplication and division number sentences, with a strong focus on applying the area model to demonstrate multiplicative thinking. Students will also be building skills in estimation and rounding to assess the reasonableness of their answers.
In our non-number units, students will be exploring the important features of maps including keys, legends and scales. Students will also be learning to estimate, measure, and compare the area and mass of everyday objects using appropriate metric units. We will also revisit our data unit in greater depth, conducting statistical investigations through surveys and other methods, and analysing the effectiveness of different data displays.
Inquiry
This term during Inquiry sessions, students will investigate the properties of solids, liquids, and gases, and how heating or cooling can cause changes of state. They will also be examining how materials are used and reused based on their properties. Students will explore different sources of heat energy and discover how they are used in everyday life. They will investigate how heat is transferred between objects by measuring changes in temperature during hands-on experiments. Students will also learn about different types of forces, including push and pull, and explore how these forces can cause objects to move, change direction, speed up, slow down, or remain still.
