2023 Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) titration competition

Report and Results

In late August 33 JMSS students participated in the 2023 Royal Australian Chemical Institute (RACI) titration competition. The students needed to work in teams of three to standardize a solution of Sodium Hydroxide and then use this solution to determine the concentration of Ethanoic acid solution.

The process involved using a wide variety of fancy chemistry glassware such as pipettes, burettes and multiple flasks. Students worked diligently to try and achieve the perfect endpoint where the solution was "baby girl" pale pink.

Attempting to achieve concordant results under the time pressure of the ticking clock, caused many groups to overshoot their endpoint and resulted in some very "loud" hot pink phenolphthalein solutions.

The following students achieved bronze awards:

  • Dylan Bonar
  • Kathleen Huynh
  • Mekah Saini
  • Nicholas Rowe
  • Isabella Young

They should be proud to have placed so highly in a very competitive environment.

In the end all students who participated should be proud as they all improved their practical skills.
