Dear Parents and Carers,
We've noticed more students arriving after the bell lately, and we wanted to share why those first few minutes of the day matter so much.
The start of the day is more than just the first lesson. It's when children settle in, connect with their friends, and get ready to learn. This is what we call our Morning Circle, and it runs from 9:00am to 9:12am. It's where we talk through our expectations for the day and set the children up for success, so a child who misses it starts the day a step behind. Students who arrive after it has finished often spend the rest of the morning playing catch-up, and can feel flustered walking into a room that's already busy.
It adds up, too. Missing even those first 12 minutes each day works out to more than a week of lost learning across the year and arriving 15 minutes late is closer to two weeks. The Department's Every Day Counts message says there's no safe amount of school to miss, and being here and on time is one of the biggest things that helps children achieve.
We understand that some mornings can be tricky but we are all here to support families to ensure students are arriving on time. A reminder teacher supervision starts at 8.45am and classrooms are open from 8.50am for a soft start.
