Leader of Curriculum

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As your child progresses from Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8) into Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10), they will have the opportunity to select two elective subjects to study over the next two years.

To meet NESA requirements, all students must study the following mandatory courses:

  • Catholic Studies – Sharing our Story
  • English
  • Mathematics (Advanced, Standard or General)
  • Science
  • PDHPE
  • HSIE (History and Geography)

In addition to these mandatory subjects, students will select two elective courses. Details of all available electives can be found in the attached Stage 5 Subject Selection Handbook.

To support students in making informed decisions, Marian Catholic College will be conducting the following information sessions for all Year 8 students:

Tuesday, 4 August

  • Period 2: General Information Session – Drama Room (JSE/JMO)

Wednesday, 5 August

  • Period 2: Information Session – Drama Room (MSH/GCA)
    • TAS
    • PDHPE
  • Period 4: Information Session – Drama Room (MSE/WLY)
    • Creative Arts
    • HSIE

These sessions are designed to explain the Stage 5 subject selection process and the requirements for students entering Years 9 and 10. KLA Leaders will also present information about their elective courses, outlining the content, learning experiences and opportunities available to students during 2027 and 2028.

The information in these sessions can be accessed via the student’s portal using the icon : 

 

 

During the first information session, students will receive a Subject Selection Form. Students are asked to nominate four elective preferences, ranking them from 1 to 4, with 1 being their most preferred course and 4 their least preferred.

The completed form must be signed by a parent or guardian and returned to the College Office by Monday, 10 August.

Students will be allocated to courses based on their ranked preferences. While every effort will be made to place students into their preferred electives, this cannot always be guaranteed. A student may not receive one or both of their first two preferences if:

  • the course does not run due to insufficient student interest; or
  • the course has reached its maximum enrolment
  • the student has not demonstrated a commitment to learning during Year 7 and 8 in this subject area

As you discuss subject choices with your child, we encourage you to consider the following questions together:

  • Am I genuinely interested in this subject?
  • Do I enjoy learning in this subject area?
  • Is this a subject in which I am willing to work hard and can achieve success?

Choosing electives based on interest, ability and future aspirations is the best way to ensure students remain engaged and enjoy their learning throughout Stage 5.
