Students completing the VET Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship at Elisabeth Murdoch College are putting their practical skills to work as they approach the completion of their second year of the building course.
Under the guidance of Trainer/Assessor Jordan Knight, students are currently preparing for their final assessment project — the construction of chicken coops.
As part of the project, students are required to develop their own design and consider important aspects of the construction, including providing adequate air movement and protection from pests. Their design then becomes the basis for planning and completing the practical construction.
During the practical assessment, students will demonstrate a range of building and construction skills, including:
The project provides students with an opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge they have developed throughout their building course to a practical, real-world project. It also allows them to demonstrate their ability to plan, work safely, use tools and materials appropriately, and produce a finished product to a suitable standard.
Once completed, the chicken coops will be a permanent feature of the EMC Farm. VET agriculture will be able to utilise these throughout their course.
We look forward to seeing the finished chicken coops and celebrating the achievements of our students as they complete their Certificate II in Building and Construction Pre-apprenticeship.
