Simon Jones (Senior Assistant Principal)

The year is moving forward rapidly. Our year 12 Vocational Major students and those who have chosen the individual learning pathway will be finishing their school lives at the end of term and as such have only a few days left of their school journey. The VM students put together the presentation of their Complex Community Projects at Montalto winery , which was a showcase of their schooling journey. It was an excellent event attended by a large number of students, staff and families and I commend the staff and students for their work. They have been a fantastic group of students who all have very bright futures to look forward to and we thank them all for their individual and collective contributions and wish them happiness and success beyond school. 

Similarly, the year 12 VCE students are now working towards the completion of coursework and will then focus on the upcoming exams. Practice exams will again run in the first week of the holidays and are an essential part of the preparation for the impending VCAA exams. Students need to factor this into their planning and ensure that they attend all exams.

All students have now made their pathways and elective choices for 2027 and we are now preparing the school timetable for Jumpstart which begins on the 16th November. This is the date that students roll into the next year level and commence classes with new subjects and teachers. It is vital that all students attend the Jumpstart program to ensure that they are fully prepared for the 2027 academic year.

It is important however that all students continue to deliver their best effort in the remainder of this year to ensure that they are as prepared as possible to face the challenges that will come with the next level of learning.

This term, we received our 2026 NAPLAN results for Year Seven and Year Nine. Students in both cohorts significantly exceeded the state averages for Reading, Writing and Numeracy. In Year Seven, 77% of students achieved Strong or Exceeding in Reading, 76% in Numeracy and 74% in Writing. In Year Nine, 78% achieved Strong or Exceeding in Numeracy, 75% in Writing and 74% in Reading. The growth data was equally positive. In Year Seven, the proportion of students achieving medium or high growth reached 80% in Reading, 78% in Writing and 76% in Numeracy. In Year Nine, 85% achieved medium or high growth in Numeracy, 82% in Writing and 79% in Reading. These Year Nine results exceeded both similar schools and our network across all three areas. These results reflect the consistent effort of our students, the expertise and commitment of our staff and the support of families. NAPLAN is one source of evidence about student learning, and it should always be considered alongside classroom assessments, teacher judgements and student work. However, these results provide strong evidence of student achievement and growth, while also helping us identify priorities for further teaching, support and extension. Our parent-teacher interviews were very well attended this term. I was particularly pleased to see parents, carers and students accessing the Maestro platform before attending and using this information to support their conversations with teachers. Maestro provides families with clear and accessible information about student achievement, progress and learning behaviours. Engaging with this information beforehand allows the interview to focus more directly on strengths, areas for improvement and practical next steps. Book Week was another highlight, with outstanding participation from students and staff across the college. The creativity and enthusiasm evident throughout the week demonstrated the important place that reading continues to hold within our college community. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to the organisation of the week and all those who participated. To all students approaching the final stages of their VCE and VCE Vocational Major programs, I wish you the very best. Whether completing examinations, final assessments or applied learning requirements, your preparation, persistence and commitment have brought you to this point. Continue to work steadily, seek support when needed and approach the final stages of the year with confidence. Finally, thank you to our students, staff and families for your ongoing contribution to our college. I hope everyone enjoys a well earned break, and I look forward to a strong and positive Term 4.
