Why is Calm Communication Important Between Adults and Kids?
Communication is important because it helps children feel safe, heard, respected and understood. When adults communicate calmly, children are more likely to listen, share their feelings and talk about problems rather than becoming upset or shutting down.
Calm communication also teaches children how to manage their own emotions and solve problems. Children learn by watching the adults around them, so when we use a calm voice, listen carefully and choose respectful words, we are modelling the behaviour we want them to use with others.
Calm communication helps children to:
🗣️ Feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings.
👂 Know that their ideas and feelings matter.
❤️ Build trusting relationships with adults.
🧠 Learn how to manage big emotions.
🤝 Solve problems and disagreements respectfully.
🌱 Develop positive communication skills they can use with friends.
🛑 Understand boundaries and expectations without feeling threatened.
Remember: Calm adults help create calm children. It doesn't mean adults never get frustrated. It means that when we are frustrated, we try to pause, regulate ourselves and communicate respectfully, even when things are difficult. Deep breaths. Notice the triggers or your tone changing and try your best to regulate. It's important to know our own triggers, for example lacking food (some of us do get 'hangry'), lacking sleep, too much screentime, overwhelm from the day etc.
Calm homes help to foster calmer, happier students.
