This term, Grade 5/6 students have been reading the novel War Horse, which tells the story of a young horse named Joey and his journey through World War I. Through the novel, students explore themes of courage, friendship, loyalty and the impact of war.

When we are not reading our class novel, students are building their background knowledge about how horses, and other animals, were used during the war. This helps deepen their understanding of the text and the historical context in which it is set.
