Opportunities Everywhere at Keysborough College
Keysborough College is a vibrant and thriving community where there is always something happening. Whether you are part of our Acacia Campus or Banksia Campus, opportunities to learn, participate and grow are everywhere.
The outstanding work taking place both inside and beyond the classroom is a testament to the commitment of our students, staff and wider college community. Every day, students are encouraged to embrace new experiences, challenge themselves and make the most of the many opportunities available to them. At Keysborough College, we believe that opportunities should never be passed by – when you see one, say yes and take it.
This edition of the newsletter is a wonderful example of the rich and diverse experiences that abound across our college. We hope you enjoy celebrating the achievements, learning and involvement of our students and staff, and that these stories inspire everyone to continue saying yes to the opportunities that make Keysborough College such a special place to belong. I am sure there will be many more references to these events throughout the newsletter as we continue to celebrate the incredible work happening across our college every day.
Celebrating Creativity During Art Week
Our Arts Domain once again delivered a fantastic Art Week across both campuses, showcasing the talent, creativity and enthusiasm that exists within our college community.
Students enthusiastically participated in a range of engaging activities that encouraged them to express themselves creatively while also providing opportunities for staff to get involved and enjoy the festivities. Art Week has become a much anticipated event on our calendar and demonstrates the important role that the Arts play in fostering creativity, confidence and connectedness amongst our students.
One of the lasting legacies from this year's Art Week will be the addition of two new murals, one at each campus, which are currently being finalised. These murals will serve as a visible reminder of the artistic talent that exists within our school and will continue to brighten our learning environments for years to come.
Africa Day Brings Our Community Together
A new highlight was the celebration of Africa Day, organised by our new African Youth Liaison Officer, Eyerus Hawkins.
The celebrations across both campuses were vibrant, energetic and full of joy. Students immersed themselves in a variety of activities and embraced the opportunity to learn more about African culture. The singing and dancing performances were especially popular and created an atmosphere of celebration that resonated throughout each campus.
Events such as Africa Day are incredibly important as they strengthen our sense of belonging and celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes Keysborough College such a special place. We are proud of the inclusive environment we continue to build and thank Eyerus for her outstanding efforts in bringing these celebrations to life.
Inspiring Future Learners Through STEM Partnerships
The GATE/STEM team recently hosted a High Abilities Outreach Program, welcoming twenty Grade 4 and 5 students from Keysborough Primary School to the Banksia Campus.
Developed by Jose and Eric, the engaging STEM-focused program provided students with hands-on experiences across Psychology, Physics and Chemistry. The visiting students enthusiastically embraced the challenges presented to them and returned to their primary school excited about their learning experiences.
Programs such as these are an excellent example of how Keysborough College actively builds connections with our local community while simultaneously inspiring the next generation of learners. We thank everyone involved in organising and delivering such a successful event.
Industry Professionals Bring Learning to Life
Our Industry in Real Life (IRL) sessions, held during Careers classes on Monday 18 May, were another tremendous success across both campuses.
Fourteen guest speakers generously volunteered their time to present across ten simultaneous sessions, exposing students to an incredible range of professions and career pathways. Students heard authentic stories and practical advice from professionals working in psychology, law, finance, architecture, trades, health and sport.
One of the greatest strengths of this initiative is the opportunity for students to engage directly with people working in industries they may aspire to join in the future. The event was extremely well received, with students appreciating the honest conversations about career journeys, educational pathways and the realities of different professions. We sincerely thank all of our guest speakers for investing their time and expertise in supporting our students as they begin to explore their own futures.
Students Giving Back to the Community
Our Banksia Year 10 Applied Learning Community @ Work students have commenced an exciting project at Spring Parks (West), where they are assisting with upgrading garden beds.
Even after their first session, significant progress has already been made, and it has been wonderful to see students applying their practical skills while making a meaningful contribution to the local community.
Additionally, our CONSTRUCT students have done a fantastic job renovating a cubby house as part of their hands-on learning program. The transformation has been remarkable, with students applying practical skills, teamwork and creativity to breathe new life into the project.
From the impressive before-and-after results, it is clear that students have taken great pride in their work and embraced the opportunity to develop valuable skills in a real-world context.
The project is now entering its final stages, with only a few finishing touches remaining before the cubby house finds a new home within our local community. We are excited that this wonderful piece of work will soon be donated, allowing others to benefit from the students' efforts and generosity. Projects such as these perfectly capture the spirit of applied learning at Keysborough College, providing students with meaningful experiences that develop confidence, practical skills and a strong sense of community contribution. We look forward to sharing the final result and celebrating where this special project ultimately finds its new home.
Experiences such as these allow students to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills while also fostering a sense of civic responsibility. We are incredibly proud to see our students stepping beyond the classroom and making a positive impact in their community.
Music Continues to Set Keysborough College Apart
Music remains one of the standout programs at Keysborough College and is undoubtedly one of the many features that distinguishes our college from others.
This term, we proudly held our semester Year 7 Music Concerts at both Acacia and Banksia Campuses, followed by our College Winter Concert at Banksia. These performances provide valuable opportunities for students to showcase their learning while also strengthening connections with our parent and wider community. The dedication and expertise of our music staff are evident in every performance as they work tirelessly to develop students' technical skills, confidence and passion for music.
One of the true highlights of these events is witnessing students at both ends of their musical journey at Keysborough College. There is something incredibly special about seeing our Year 7 students take to the stage as beginners and then watching our senior students perform with confidence and sophistication across a multitude of ensembles.
From swing music and movie themes to contemporary rock songs, the breadth and quality of performances are truly awe inspiring.
A College Full of Opportunity
Collectively, these experiences highlight what makes Keysborough College such a dynamic and exciting place to learn. Every day, our students are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new experiences and discover talents and passions they may not have previously known existed.
None of this would be possible without the dedication of our outstanding staff, the support of our families and the enthusiasm of our students, who continually say yes to the many opportunities placed before them.
As we move through another busy and rewarding year, we encourage every student to continue getting involved, trying something new and making the most of all that Keysborough College has to offer.
