Child Safe Standard 6 – Keeping Children Safe Through Our People

At St Michael's, the safety and wellbeing of every child is our highest priority. Child Safe Standard 6 focuses on ensuring that every adult who works with children is suitable, well-prepared and supported to create a safe and respectful environment.

This means we:

• Carefully recruit all staff and volunteers, including thorough referee and background checks.
• Ensure all staff, volunteers and contractors hold the appropriate Working with Children Checks or Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) registration before working with students.
• Provide comprehensive child safety induction and ongoing professional learning so staff understand their responsibilities, including recognising, reporting and responding to concerns.
• Maintain high expectations for professional conduct through regular supervision, reflection and support, ensuring child safety remains central to everything we do.

By investing in our staff and volunteers, we create a culture where children feel safe, valued and respected, and where every adult understands their role in protecting and promoting the wellbeing of all students.

At St Michael's, safeguarding children is everyone's responsibility, and we remain committed to continuously strengthening our practices to ensure our school is a safe place for every child to learn and thrive.

Each month for the next ten months we will spotlight each of the 11 Child Safety Standards. MACS has developed resources  to support a deepened understanding of the standards for parents and teachers and how they help support the safety of each child.
