Principal's Report

It is a widely held belief in education that Term 3 is the hardest of all four terms in the school year. I think it might come down to the lingering winter and the memory of those shorter days; those colder days. It is true that Term 3 feels like the pressure point in the year because it presents that moment before the finishing line for our senior students. It is a term primed for realised potential and for the final lessons to learn before they are put to the test.
At Ballarat High School, all of this is true, but it is also the term when so much comes together and where the strength of our student leadership has its greatest impact. It is not unique to have farewell assemblies or valedictory balls, and it is not unique to have student-led events or charity drives. But what makes the moments that culminate this term so special, what sets our school apart from so many others, is the sheer outpouring of gratitude and real emotion that we have witnessed across these final weeks.
When we gathered for our final term assembly, that unique BHS spirit was on full display in a way that words struggle to capture. The atmosphere in the hall was electric, yet grounded in a deep, shared respect for the journey our Year 12 students have taken. As a whole school, we stood together to acknowledge this cohort—not just for their academic achievements or their contributions to sport, the arts and leadership, but simply for who they are as individuals and what they have meant to every one of us.
That kind of dynamic cannot be faked and it certainly cannot be manufactured. It is built over years of shared triumphs, everyday interactions in the corridors and mutual respect. As our Year 12s walked through the traditional guard of honour formed by our Year 11s, the genuine admiration in the room was palpable. The cheers, the applause, and the personal messages of support echoed through the packed crowd in the gym. It is important to recognise not only the legacy of kindness that our soon to be departing Year 12s leave behind, but also to note a shift in culture and a sense that there are many good days ahead for our school and our community.
This extraordinary spirit carried directly into our Valedictory Ball—a magnificent, packed evening where our Year 12s dressed up to celebrate this monumental milestone alongside their proud families and devoted friends. Looking out across the room, it was impossible not to feel a sense of overwhelming pride. What made the night truly unforgettable was the incredible number of teachers who attended. Their presence spoke volumes. It was not merely a professional duty; it was a heartfelt testament to the bond, support and strength that define our staff and student relationships, and it is a reaffirmation of a culture that visibly shows what it means to belong to Ballarat High School. Our staff have walked alongside these students through every step of their secondary education, guiding them through challenges, celebrating their wins and watching them mature into remarkable young people.
To our Year 12 cohort: as you prepare for your final examinations and the exciting transitions that lie beyond, I want you to reflect on what this school community has built around you and what you have contributed to our DNA. Whatever the next steps each of you take—whether university, vocational training, entering the workforce, or traveling the world—know that you are moving forward from a place that you will always belong to and will always be a part of. The values you have developed here, the resilience you have forged through winter terms and busy exam periods, and the connections you have nurtured will serve as your foundation for years to come.
That same grit and passion reverberated right across our extra-curricular endeavours this term. In a historic moment for BHS sport, our Senior First Team basketball squad ended a 20-year drought to claim the BAS championship title. Trailing by 14 points with just nine minutes on the clock, our team rallied with sheer determination to overrun Grammar in a thrilling comeback victory that will be talked about for years to come.
When things got tough, they dug and their trust and belief in each other won the day.
Equal bravery and brilliance were shown by our Performing Arts students, whose ongoing excellence shone brightly through the raw, vulnerability of the Year 12 Drama solos. That artistic tradition connects back to a rich, enduring legacy of what Performing Arts means to our students—one beautifully highlighted recently when current staff, students, and former members of the iconic school band Whizz Bang took the stage together at their reunion. From the basketball court to the stage, these moments capture the very soul of who we are: resilient, creative, connected and fiercely proud of our identity.
As this term draws to a close, I extend my deepest gratitude to our dedicated staff, our supportive families and above all, our students who bring energy, heart and purpose to Ballarat High School every single day. We look forward to supporting our seniors through their final stretch and welcoming everyone back refreshed for Term 4.
It’s going to be a big one!
