EMPOWERING THE FUTURE

Celebrating the new Health education curriculum at MCK!

Education isn’t just about formulas, essays and historical dates; it's about equipping our young people with the practical, real-world skills they need to thrive. Following the successful rollout of Year 7 Health education in Semester 1, we are delighted to share a progress update on this dynamic new subject with our school community.

This engaging, future-focused curriculum moves far beyond traditional health classes. Designed to foster emotional resilience, cultural fluency, critical thinking and physical safety, it provides students with a roadmap to navigate adolescence with confidence, respect, empathy and integrity.

Our new curriculum has been carefully structured across four comprehensive terms, guiding students from self-discovery through to proactive community leadership and safety.

Beginning with a celebration of personal identity, self-worth and cultural diversity in Term 1, students established the foundation for empathetic connection. In Term 2, the focus turned inward and interpersonal, expanding emotional literacy, encouraging healthy relationship dynamics and unpacking age-appropriate consent education. As students navigate the middle of the year, Term 3 offers strategies for adolescent health, digital literacy and community connection. Finally, Term 4 will equip students with life-saving practical skills from substance awareness and anti-bullying initiatives to hands-on First Aid training, ensuring our young people grow into confident, informed and compassionate individuals.

What makes this subject special?

So far in this year's health lessons, I have found the subject interesting in a lot of ways. There have been many things that I never knew before, and now I understand a lot more than I did at the start of the year. For example, the topic on stigma and stereotypes and how they affect people's mental health made me understand how not only bullying does to one, but also the aftermath and how it takes a long time to recover from. Also, the classes themself are really nice and engaging. There are many fun activities to allow us to have fun and learn at the same time. Overall in my opinion, Health is one of the subjects that help us understand deeper into the life we live. One day, I believe that this knowledge that we learn today will help us greatly in our adult life.

Year 7 Health is an important subject because it teaches students how to take care of their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. In health class, we learn about healthy eating, regular exercise, the human body, mental health, consent and making safe choices and so much more. These lessons help students develop good habits that can improve their quality of life and reduce the risk of illness. Health class also encourages teamwork, respect and responsibility, giving students the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions and live healthier lives.
