Hayley Paternoster is a valued member of our Melba Community. She was the school nurse for many years.
In August 2025, at the age of 14, Hayley’s daughter, Amy received a diagnosis of inoperable and incurable cancer. Her vibrant life, pursuing her passions of singing, playing the bassoon, hockey, creating art and enjoying her time at school with friends was abruptly interrupted when she experienced a rapid decline in her health. After many diagnostic tests and surgeries, Amy was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive tumor which has metastasized throughout the left and right sides of her chest, right shoulder and spine. These tumors have since progressed and extended to her abdomen. Treatment commenced expeditiously, involving intensive chemotherapy and immunotherapy. Due to the cancer and side effects Amy’s life is now characterized by medical interventions, diagnostic procedures and ongoing treatments. Amy has navigated this transition with notable grace and a positive disposition.
During this past week, Amy’s family received some difficult news from the cancer team. All available treatment options have been exhausted. She is currently on a new chemotherapy regimen and medication that may help to slightly slow the progression, but it will not halt the growth or new tumors growing.
Regrettably, the expenses for Amy’s family are increasing. Many of her medications are increasing and not covered by PBS and she now requires specialist medical equipment and interventions.
We are honoured to be able to assist to support the family to provide medical care and also to help tick off her bucket list of experiences while she still can. This period of her life should be dedicated to creating lasting memories and fulfilling her dreams with her best friend, her brother, her incredible mum Hayley and superstar of a dad.
Any contribution you might be able to offer would be deeply appreciated.
