Art Corner

We are continuing our series of “if you could own any piece of art, what would it be and why?” – such a good question!

Mr Van Marle:I’ve always enjoyed slightly absurd things and I think that this image fits into that mould. Magritte described the painting as an exploration of the conflict between "the visible that is hidden and the visible that is present," stating, "Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see". I like that explanation. But most of all, its use in The Thomas Crown affair movie remake in 1999 with Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo is really cool!

Ms Chong: Back in 2013, on my last day in Riga, Latvia, a map led me to Cēsis, but it was chance that led me to an artist. While following the map across the town, I met Matiass Jansons, who created many of the art projects across the town and around Europe. The Gadsimtiem ejot is dedicated to the medieval era of Cēsis. Legend says that if you rub the lantern, the light will show you the way to good thoughts and deeds.
