Congratulations to all our Year 3–6 students who participated in the Australian Maths Trust’s Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC). We are proud of their willingness to embrace a challenge, think creatively and persevere with unfamiliar problems.
The AMC challenges students to apply their mathematical knowledge through 30 problems that increase in difficulty. Covering areas such as number, geometry, measurement and probability, the competition encourages students to look for patterns, reason logically and explore different approaches to finding solutions.
At Surfside Primary School, opportunities such as the AMC play an important role in extending mathematical learning. They encourage students to deepen their understanding, make connections between concepts and apply their learning in new situations. Working through a challenging problem also provides valuable practice in persistence, flexible thinking and learning from mistakes.
This year, our Year 1 and 2 students also joined the adventure, participating for the first time in the trial AMC Early Primary competition. This new initiative introduces younger learners to the excitement of mathematical problem-solving, and we congratulate them on embracing this opportunity with curiosity and enthusiasm.
A special congratulations goes to Orin Siddik, who received an AMC Prize and the Peter O’Halloran Award for achieving a perfect score! The Peter O’Halloran Award recognises students who answer every question correctly—an exceptional achievement. We are incredibly proud of her outstanding result.
Well done to every participant. Whether you solved a tricky question, tried a new strategy or kept going when the answer wasn’t obvious, your efforts deserve celebration.
