RE Learning in 1/2HK
Lord Chooses David To Be King
Year 1/2 HK has been exploring the meaning of the word “Messiah” and the story of David being chosen by God (1 Samuel 16:1–13). The children reflected on the understanding that God does not judge people by their appearance or how impressive they seem, but looks at what is in their hearts. As Samuel searched for a new king, the children discovered that David, the youngest of Jesse’s sons, was chosen because God saw something special in him.
During class discussions, the children identified the difference between what people see on the outside and the qualities God sees on the inside, such as kindness, love, honesty, patience and generosity. Inspired by the words, “The Lord looks at the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7), they reflected on their own qualities completing the sentence, “Inside my heart today, God sees…”. They learnt about how God values who we are on the inside and that we can follow Jesus’ example by sharing love and kindness with others.
Enjoy reading 1/2HK’s reflections and discovering the special qualities they recognise within themselves.
Sunday Gospel
The liturgy of the Catholic Church provides a framework for reflection which is used by Catholics throughout the world. Each week in the Newsletter, you will find the Sunday Gospel as well as some discussion questions to have with your child/ren.
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew
When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees they got together and, to disconcert him, one of them put a question, ‘Master, which is the greatest commandment of the law?’ Jesus said, ‘You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second resembles it: you must love your neighbour as yourself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law, and the Prophets also.’
Discussion Questions
1. What does Jesus say is the most important commandment?
2. What did Jesus say was the second most important commandment?
3. How do we show we love God?
4. How do we show we love others as much as we love ourselves?
5. What would the world be like if we all believed these commandments and put them into practice?
