Principal's Update

A Message from the Acting Principal

I am pleased to introduce myself to the Lowanna College community as the Acting Principal. It is a genuine honour to serve in this role and to support a school with such a strong sense of purpose and pride.

My teaching career began at Kurnai College in 2001, where I spent many rewarding years in a range of roles. I later worked with the Department of Education as a Leadership Partner before joining Warragul Regional College as an Assistant Principal for five years. I commenced at Lowanna College in Semester Two of 2025, also as an Assistant Principal, and I am delighted to now lead the College in an acting capacity.

I am deeply committed to creating environments where young people feel known, valued and supported by trusted adults. Strong relationships are at the heart of effective learning and our school community works hard to live the values of Respect, Integrity, Determination, Growth and Excellence. Lowanna College is a place where people care for one another and strive for the best outcomes for every student. Our Wellbeing Team provides vital support to students and families and our Disability Inclusion Team ensures that every learner has the opportunity to thrive.

As an educator, I believe in lifelong learning. I enjoy exploring new ideas, collaborating with colleagues and listening to the stories and experiences that make each student unique. I am continually inspired by the creativity, talent and achievements of our young people, both inside and outside the classroom.

Lowanna College continues to strengthen engagement and attendance through programs such as the Sports Academy, the Lowanna Koorie Program, proudly a Marrung Lead School, and the Lowanna Institute of the Arts. We are also investing heavily in Literacy and Numeracy, supported by a dedicated team of tutors.

When students attend school every day, they give themselves the best chance to succeed; academically, socially and emotionally. Regular attendance helps children stay connected to their learning, build strong friendships and develop the routines that set them up for life beyond school. Even small gaps can make it harder for students to keep up or feel confident in the classroom. As parents and carers, your support makes a powerful difference. By encouraging consistent attendance, helping establish morning routines and communicating with us early if challenges arise, you play a vital role in your child’s progress. Together, we can ensure every student feels supported, engaged and ready to thrive. See attached letter with more information.

Our staff have been working on consistent, predictable classroom procedures and routines this term for students entering and leaving classrooms.  There is strong evidence to suggest that the degree to which daily classroom routines occur in the same order, at the same times and in the same way each day is an important predictor of student success and can provide all students with a sense of security.

Please can you reinforce at home that mobile phones will not be tolerated at school and will be confiscated if seen.  The Victorian Governments ban on mobile phones during school hours is designed to give students the best possible environment for learning and wellbeing. Without phones, classrooms are calmer and more focused, helping students concentrate and engage more deeply with their work. It also reduces distractions and interruptions that can make it harder for young people to stay on track. Importantly, keeping phones away during the day supports healthier social interactions; students talk, play and connect face‑to‑face, which strengthens friendships and builds confidence. The ban also helps minimise issues like cyberbullying and social pressure, creating a safer and more supportive school environment. Overall, a phone‑free school day helps students learn better, feel better and make the most of their time at school.  All mobile phones must be switched off and securely stored during school hours.

Thank you for your ongoing support and partnership, it truly makes a difference. I look forward to the energy and opportunities that the rest of the term will bring as we continue working together to help every student thrive.

Yours sincerely,

Bernadette Cropper

Acting College Principal
