Year 1/2 Cluster News

Upcoming Events:

Tuesday 2nd June: Year 1/2 cluster Celebration of Learning (COL)

Each cluster has one COL each year. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to share their learning, which will include the Australian Curriculum areas of English, HASS, Visual Art, Design and Japanese.

Families are invited to attend one session, either 5.30pm – 6.15pm OR 6.00pm-6.45pm. Each session begins with the students performing a song, then they share their learning with families in the classrooms and make onigiri in the Japanese classroom. A flyer will be sent home this week.

Friday 12th June Alice in Wonderland excursion - 10:00am – 1.30pm

All Year 1-4 students will travel by school bus to the Shedley Theatre to watch a youth production of ‘Alice in Wonderland’. We are excited that some of our own students have been cast in this production. Permission notes are online via TASS Parent Lounge.

Thank you to the P&F for generously subsidising the cost of the tickets.

We are looking for volunteers to meet us at the theatre and supervise students from 10.30am – 1:00pm while they eat and watch the production. Please email your child’s teacher if you would like to volunteer and have all your volunteer checks up-to-date.

Gumboots in the Nature Play area

Get ready, Peppa Pig: it’s time for some muddy fun! To use the nature play, students must wear gumboots from now and throughout winter. Children continue to wear their sneakers to school and change into boots at playtime. Gumboots can remain at school on your child’s bag hook. Please place them in a bag labelled with your child’s name.

Strawberry/Tomato containers

Please keep sending these in. Students have been looking at health messages and designing packaging labels for their onigiri, which will be shared at the Celebration of Learning. We appreciate washed containers sent in as you are finished with them. A huge thank you to those who have sent some in already!

Home Inquiry

We are encouraging the students to notice verbs in writing. Ask your child to look around the house for different items and name what people ‘do’ with them e.g. you step on a stool, you whisk some eggs.

Reading: every night for 10-15 minutes. Please listen to your child read the decodable books and ask the ‘check for understanding’ questions at the back. The ‘Interest books' with coloured round stickers on the front may need to be read together.

Central Idea: Places and processes are involved in producing food.

Lines of Inquiry

People and places involved in food production

Processes involved in food production

How people’s choices affect our world.

Students research and record ‘from farm to plate’ food production sequences. Next, they inquire into food waste from lunches, the effect on the environment and ideas for how leftover food could be repurposed e.g. overripe bananas made into muffins.

Students inquire into how Christians restore relationships through forgiveness.

Writer’s Workshop:

Students inquire into using a variety of verbs to craft sentences e.g. instead of ‘I went along the path– ‘I skipped along the path. Year 2 students build on with adverbs e.g. ‘I skipped happily along the path.

Readers Workshop:

Students inquire into how to read to locate information (research) and how to reference (a list or photo of the books/resources used).

Mathematics:

Year 1 and 2: addition and subtraction and capacity (linked with the Unit of Inquiry)

Year 1: Money – skip counting with money by $2, $5 and $10

Year 2: Money – fractions of money e.g. half of $8 = $4, half of $4 = $2 so a quarter of $8 is $2.
