Reading Around the School

Reading is alive and thriving across Galilee this term, with students engaging in rich discussions, developing comprehension skills and discovering new books to enjoy.

Our Prep students have been building strong comprehension foundations through quality picture story books. They have been identifying characters, settings, problems and solutions, while also making thoughtful predictions before, during and after reading. These discussions are helping students become active, engaged readers who think deeply about texts.

In Year 1, students have been developing their summarising skills using familiar fairy tales such as Little Red Riding Hood. By identifying the key events in a story and retelling them in the correct sequence, students are learning to distinguish the most important information while strengthening their understanding of story structure.

Our Year 3 students have been developing their understanding of cause and effect, learning to identify how events and actions influence what happens next in a story. They have been using evidence from the text to explain their thinking, making connections between characters' choices and the consequences that follow. This important comprehension skill is helping students read with greater understanding and confidence.

Our Year 4 students have expanded their reading by sampling a wide range of texts, from engaging graphic novels to more complex novels. To encourage a love of reading, they have launched a class Book Club, where students share their thoughts about books and recommend titles to their peers. They have also created a vibrant display showcasing what they are currently reading, inspiring other students to discover their next great book.

It is wonderful to see students across every year level developing a genuine love of reading while strengthening the comprehension skills that support lifelong learning.
