NEWS FROM SICK BAY

Winter sports are now well underway, and as a result, Monday morning in First Aid gets very busy assessing the Saturday and Sunday sports injuries.
While this certainly keeps First Aid busy (and I do enjoy catching up with everyone!), I thought it was a good time to send out a quick reminder about treating sprains and strains at home. Early management can make a big difference in reducing pain, swelling and those day-three aches and stiffness.
A good way to remember the initial treatment is RICER:
- R – Rest: Avoid activities that cause pain and give the injured area time to recover.
- I – Ice: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15–20 minutes every 2–3 hours during the first 48 hours.
- C – Compression: Use a firm (but not tight) elastic bandage to help reduce swelling.
- E – Elevation: Raise the injured limb to reduce
- R- Referral: Refer to a GP and or physio for ongoing treatment
Looking after these injuries early can help speed recovery and get your child back to doing what they enjoy.
