Expressions of Interest: School for Student Leadership (SSL) – Year 9

Expressions of Interest: School for Student Leadership (SSL) – Year 9
We are delighted to invite expressions of interest from Year 9 students for the School for Student Leadership (SSL) program in Term 2.
Gisborne Secondary College has the opportunity to nominate four students to attend a 9-week residential program at the Snowy River Campus (Marlo). During their time at SSL, students live and learn alongside up to 45 peers from regional and metropolitan schools across Victoria, forming strong connections and developing lifelong skills.
School for Student Leadership is a highly regarded Victorian Department of Education program that has been running for over 20 years, designed to support potential and emerging student leaders in Year 9.
Students participate in rich learning experiences well beyond the traditional classroom, including outdoor education activities such as hiking and canoeing, while building independence, confidence, and resilience. The program is structured around nine key learning concepts:
- Resilience
- Respectful relationships
- Identity
- Empathy
- Learning strategies
- Health and wellbeing
- Emotional management
- Collaboration
- The environment
A highlight of the program is the Community Learning Project, where students collaboratively plan and deliver a meaningful project at Gisborne Secondary College that applies the leadership skills and learning developed during their time away.
“The camp changes you. It inspires you to discover who you are and what you’re capable of. You end up doing things you never thought possible, alongside incredible people who become lifelong friends. It truly is a life-changing experience.”— Kye S, former GSC School Captain
