Ella Gould, a former student here at Mount Beauty Secondary College, has returned this term to complete her final teaching rounds. She is studying to become an Outdoor Education, PE, Health and Applied Learning teacher. It seems like not that long ago that Ella was in our corridors, as an active and involved student. She has brought lots of new ideas with her and has been working closely with Lenny Comerford as her mentor teacher. Ella will be with us for a total of 5 weeks, at which time, she will become a qualified teacher. Good luck Ella!
Tuesday the 12th of May is our House Athletics Sports Day. We value attendance at this event as it is considered a day of school and students are expected to attend the whole day. Even if athletics and running is not their thing, there are many other ways that students can earn points for their house, such as dressing up in House colours and showing a strong team spirit.
Family members are always welcome, but please come to the announcers table to register your attendance. This is just one of our Child Safety measures to ensure our students are in a safe environment.
Our Year 8 and 10 students participated in the Teen Mental Health First Aid Program this week, and I was lucky enough to sit in on a couple of sessions to hear the messages being provided. While mental health can sometimes be an awkward topic to discuss, it was great to hear the students responding in mature and thoughtful ways, showing that the stigma sometimes associated with mental health is diminishing.
Key messages from this program were about how to help a friend and be there for them if they are going through a rough patch. The main steps are that if you have noticed a change in someone, for a length of time, talk to them and see if they are ok, or if they need help. Practical strategies were provided to assist students with starting these often difficult conversations and where to get help for their friends if needed. Thanks to our local council, who funds this program for all the schools in the Alpine Shire.
