Year 8 River & Coastal Days
Year 8 students will be embarking on two Outdoor Education day trips over the final two weeks of Term 3.
The Coastal Day will involve a trip to the Tasman Peninsula, where students will apply swimming and scrambling techniques around the coast and Tessellated Pavement. The River Day will involve rafting on the Huon or the River Derwent.
Please refer to the information letter in the Paperly form that was sent out this week. This letter includes a list of what to pack.
A reminder that EpiPens and any other medications should be packed and handed in to Outdoor Education staff on arrival at Bell Street.

LIGHTS! CAMERA! PANTO!
On Wednesday 16 September from 6.00pm-7:30pm, each House will go head to head to compete for the Middle School House Pantomime shield. Performing Pixar favourites with a Friends’ School twist, the evening promises to be a night of entertainment and colourful fun!
Students in the cast and crew will stay after school on Wednesday 16 September to rehearse and make any last minute adjustments. Staff will be at School to supervise their rehearsals and we recommend that students bring additional food to have a snack after school. Paperly permissions for students involved have been sent home this week.
Student audience members will not be able to be supervised between 3:30pm-6.00pm. They will be dismissed from school as normal and return for the show.
Tickets are available for $5 each via TryBooking, with all proceeds being donated to Hobart City Mission’s Safe Sleep Space. The Student Voice Council is aiming to raise enough to purchase a chest freezer for the shelter, and every ticket will help them get closer to their target!
Any questions? Email Essie Hoggart.
Wellbeing Activities
Thursday 17 September will be a Free Dress Day at the Middle School. There will also be a hot chocolate and Tim Tam combo available for $2.00 at recess.
R U OK? Day – Thursday 10 September
Today our Middle School community is recognising R U OK? Day. This national day of action reminds us that meaningful connection and regular, open conversations can make a positive difference to someone who may be finding things difficult.
While R U OK? Day provides an important annual reminder, we know that life happens every day. Our school is committed to building strong, supportive relationships throughout the year so that students feel comfortable speaking up and seeking support when things get tough.
Students have been learning about R U OK?
As part of our wellbeing program, students have been learning about the importance of looking out for one another and having conversations when someone may not be travelling well.
Students have been introduced to the four simple steps promoted by the R U OK? campaign:
- Ask: Start a friendly, relaxed conversation and ask how someone is going.
- Listen: Give them your full attention and listen without rushing to solve the problem.
- Encourage action: Encourage them to think about what might help and who they could talk to for further support.
- Check in: Follow up with them later to show that you care and are still there for them.
Students have also been encouraged to recognise changes in the behaviour of friends and classmates, such as someone becoming quieter than usual, more irritable or withdrawn. Importantly, they have been reminded that they do not need to solve someone's problems themselves. Being a good listener, showing care and helping someone connect with a trusted adult can make a real difference.
R U OK? Day is one day, but looking out for each other is something we can do every day.
Co-Curricular Photos - Tuesday 15 September
Co-curricular photos are taking place on Tuesday 15 September in Hodgkin Hall, with the photographs to be included in the Echoes yearbook. Students who are involved in a co-curricular photo have been sent an email from the Group Coordinator. Please ensure you have the correct uniform for each photo you are in;
- Sports photos: Sports uniform (track pants or shorts, polo t-shirt)
- Music or Formal photos (Council etc): Years 7 - 12 students need full formal uniform including tie, blazer, black school shoes, grey pants, shorts, skirt or formal dress.
Contact your group coordinator if you have any questions.
Absentees
If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Middle School Office (phone: 6210 2235, or email: middleschooloffice@friends.tas.edu.au). We appreciate your support in this process.
