Feast of Saints Joachim and Anne

Today we celebrated Grandparents' Day, which coincides with the feast day of the Saints, Joachim and Anne. Joachim and Anne hold a significant place in history as they were the parents of Mary, the mother of Jesus. Their cherished role as the grandparents of Jesus has led them to be the patron saints of grandparents.

Although the New Testament gives a limited amount of information on Joachim and Anne's story, they were believed to be esteemed members of the Jewish community, and their deep desire to become parents led Joachim to embark on a devoted journey of fasting and prayer in the desert. Their unwavering faith was rewarded when their daughter, Mary, came into the world.

In celebrating Joachim and Anne as saints, we find inspiration in their boundless love for each other and for Mary. Their lives serve as an example of how God calls us to embrace love and devotion. Furthermore, they remind us to honour and express gratitude to our own grandparents, who have bestowed their blessings upon us with love and care.

A prayer for grandparents on the Feast Day of St. Anne and St. Joachim, Jesus’ grandparents.

Lord God Almighty,

Bless our grandparents with long life, happiness, and health.

May they remain constant in your love and be living signs of your presence to their children and grandchildren.

We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Made in the Image of God

Year 1/2 KK have been learning about how each of us is unique and special and that we are made in the image and likeness of God- we reflect His character and have the capacity to do good and love others. The students used a scripture verse from Genesis and their own handprints to visually depict their understanding of this.

Then God said, "Let us make human beings in our image and likeness. And let them rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky. Let them rule over the tame animals, over all the earth and over all the small crawling animals on the earth." So God created human beings in his image. In the image of God he created them.
