Principal's Report

Dear Truganina College Families,

What a wonderful way to end the term, with our families, students and staff coming together to discuss the learning and progress of all of our Truganina College children.

This was another important opportunity for us to connect with our families around our shared mission of supporting the learning, wellbeing and success of every child at our College. We know that when schools and families work together, our children benefit.

If your family missed the opportunity to meet with your child's teacher this term due to illness or another commitment, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to arrange a mutually convenient time to discuss your child’s earning progress. Our teachers welcome opportunities to discuss your child's learning and progress with you.

Learning over the holidays

As we head into the holidays, it is important that our children have time to rest, have fun and recharge their batteries. At the same time, there are many simple ways families can keep children learning and they don't need to cost anything.

You might:

• Read together every day and remember, reading to your child in any language supports their learning.
• Talk about books by asking your child about the characters, setting, problem or their favourite part of the story.
• Explore information texts about something your child is interested in animals, sport, space, climate change, history or anything that sparks their curiosity.
• Cook together and talk about measurements, quantities, time and fractions.
• Go shopping together and involve your child in comparing prices, adding amounts and working out what is cheaper or more expensive.
• Play board and card games that involve counting, strategy, problem-solving and taking turns.
• Write and illustrate a book together or encourage your child to keep a holiday journal.
• Play games with dice and practise quickly adding the numbers together.
• Visit the Museum or Art Gallery or local library

Learning happens everywhere, and some of the best learning experiences come simply from talking, reading, playing and spending time together.

Growing our College gardens

You may have noticed some small hoops appearing around our garden beds. As part of continuing to build pride in our College environment, we are working with our Facilities Team and students to develop and protect our gardens.

This initiative has been driven by students who participated in the School for Student Leadership camp this year and developed a project focused on caring for our environment. Our new plants are local species selected to suit our environment and require less water.

We are looking forward to seeing our Truganina College gardens grow and flourish throughout spring!

Some farewells 

As we come to the end of the term, we will also farewell one of our Assistant Principals, James Bayard.

James has been an outstanding leader within our Secondary School and has demonstrated a particular passion for Student Voice, Agency and Leadership. His commitment to creating opportunities for young people to contribute, lead and have a genuine voice in their College has made an important contribution to Truganina.

We thank James for his leadership and contribution to our College community and wish him every success as he begins the next chapter of his educational leadership journey at Featherbrook P–9 College.

Finally, on behalf of all of the staff at Truganina College, I wish every family a safe, restful and enjoyable term break. Enjoy the opportunity to spend time together, recharge and perhaps fit in a little reading along the way!
