Year 1 Newsletter

Our Year 1 students have been busy learning, creating and exploring throughout the term! We continue to be impressed by the growth and enthusiasm they bring to their learning each day.

In Maths, we’ve been exploring addition and subtraction. Students have been learning to solve equations using number lines to help them visualise and understand number patterns. They’re building confidence with number facts and applying strategies to solve problems in fun and engaging ways! We have also been learning about 2D & 3D Shapes and the students created their own 3D Shapes using concrete materials.

In English, students have been learning how to write information reports. As part of our STEM learning, they designed and created musical instruments using a variety of materials and then wrote reports to share information about how their instruments work and the sounds they produce. Students also had the opportunity to present their reports to their peers. We were very impressed with their creativity and growing ability to organise factual information.

In Reading, we have continued to develop our comprehension skills by exploring the super six (making connections, predicting, monitoring, summarising, visualising and questioning). The students engaged well with making connections, where they explored how stories relate to their own experiences, other books they have read and the world around them. These connections help deepen their understanding and engagement with texts.

In STEM, we have been investigating forces and sound. Students explored how pushes and pulls affect movement and discovered how vibrations create sound. We had supreme incursions come to visit and helped us explore ‘Toy Science’ where students were able to explore forces, motion, materials and design through the lens of toys.

They enjoyed applying their knowledge to design and build their own instruments, testing different materials to see how they changed the sounds produced.

It has been wonderful to see the curiosity, creativity and persistence our Year 1 students bring to their learning. We are proud of all they have achieved and look forward to continuing our learning journey together.
