SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

POP-UP SHOP

Surf Coast Secondary College represented by Year 9 students at the first ever Social Enterprise Pop-up Shop at the Queen Victoria Market’s Purpose Precinct”

A select group of our Year 9 Strive students joined students from Beechworth Primary School and Sandringham College at the Purpose Precinct, at the Queen Victoria Market to celebrate the launch of the first of its kind, student Pop-Up stall on Thursday 10 October 2024.

Run by Social Enterprise Schools, the student-led program empowers young people to address a social issue they care about, turning their ideas into real-life trading social enterprises. All profits are donated to the social cause chosen by students, promoting student agency and voice.

Our students worked tirelessly in term 3, through the processes of ideation all the way to post production, bringing their ideas to life. Students had to include an element of sustainability using upcycled materials where possible, driving knowledge of the circular economy, while sticking to a very tight budget. The outcomes of their hard work were remarkable.

The trading opportunity at the Queen Victoria Market marked the culmination of their social enterprise learning journey, allowing students to embed entrepreneurial skills and engage in community-based learning and immersive opportunities to trade.

“When you see students outside of the classroom, engaging in and grappling with ‘real-world’ activities you can begin to understand how important these experiences are for young people’ especially in developing skills such as critical and creative thinking. Our kids were amazing in so many ways and most importantly left the day with more questions than answers”.

The Social Enterprise Schools Pop-Up is a first for entrepreneurial learning in Victoria, bringing student social enterprises to the Purpose Precinct’s innovative and dedicated Social Enterprise marketplace. It forms part of the ‘Purpose Kids’ Pop-Up Shop that is dedicated to showcasing and igniting social entrepreneurship in young people.

All 3 of the Surf Coast Secondary College products were selected to be displayed at the ‘Purpose Kids’ Pop Up Shop at the QVM for the public to purchase and support our students in changing the world.

The Queen Victoria Market is open Tue, Thu and Fri 9am-3pm and Sat & Sun from 9am-4pm.
