From the Classroom

Learning, Growing and Having Fun in Grade 1/2!

We have had a terrific start to the school year in Grade 1/2! It has been wonderful getting to know each other and building a positive and engaging learning environment.

In reading, we have been focusing on comprehension strategies, phonics through Mesmer and developing our independent reading stamina. Students are loving their conferencing time, where they set goals and discuss their reading progress.

During writing time, we have been working on developing strong sentences with correct punctuation. We have focused on recount writing and explored verbs and adjectives to make our sentences more interesting.

In maths, we are enjoying hands-on materials to support our learning. We have worked on place value and addition skills and Blitz Master has been a hit, with students eager to progress through the levels! We have also had fun exploring data and how we can collect and represent information.

Our theme work has been all about minibeasts and we have discovered some fascinating facts alongside our F-2 friends. Students loved creating their own 'Who am I?' books and sharing them with each other.

SWPBS has been a focus this term. We have been working towards earning tokens through displaying school values and positive behaviour. One of the highlights each week is shopping at the Toolamba Shop! Some students spend each week, however others are saving their tokens for a big spend later in the year!

Friendology continues to be an important part of our learning this year, helping students develop strategies to navigate friendships and build positive relationships.

To top it all off, we have been training for the school Cross Country and we are looking forward to the event next week!

As you can see, it has been a busy and productive start to the year in Grade 1/2. We are excited to continue our learning in the coming weeks! Check out the lovely photos below of us busy at work!

Grade 1/2 Pout Pout Fish

Students learnt how to use the pinch pot technique to create a 3D sculpture out of magiclay. They explored shape and form to create a pout pout fish, after listening to a story. Students used acrylic paint to add colour and next week will use paint pens to add details to their sculpture. Students are working on developing their fine motor skills through the manipulation of the clay.

Foundation Miro Inspired Sculptures

Students learnt about artist Joan Miró and explored his surrealist sculptures. They have begun to understand that surrealism is art that uses imagination and surprising shapes, and they explored 3D shapes and forms using plasticine. Students used bright colours and simple shapes to create a sculpture inspired by Miró. This activity develops fine motor skills by squeezing, squishing and shaping the clay.
