A word from our Math Captains

Hi everyone,

Joaquin, Max and Mateo here – the CHPS Math Captains!

At Clifton Hill Primary School, we LOVE mathematics. We’ve found some fantastic resources that families can use at home to help children continue learning long after the school day ends.

For students in Foundation to Year 2, we recommend Goat Maths, a website run by the ABC. Goat Maths helps children practise different ways to add, subtract and estimate numbers. It includes a wide range of engaging games designed for different age levels. Maths might not always seem exciting, but Goat Maths makes learning fun and interactive. We highly recommend it for younger students who are building strong number skills.

For older students in Years 2–6, we use Essential Assessment. This is a program teachers use to understand what students know and what they need to learn next. Throughout the year, students complete a pre-assessment (to show what they already know), a mid-assessment (to check their progress), and a post-assessment (to measure how far they’ve come). Between these assessments, students can practise and strengthen their skills on My Numeracy.

Once students complete an assessment, they can play games within Essential Assessment. One of these is Sunset Maths, where students choose an operation to practise and answer questions before the sun sets. The levels increase in difficulty, making it both challenging and fun. Another game is Jetpack Algebra, which has almost 30 levels. Students solve increasingly difficult problems to progress, and when they complete the game, it restarts at an even more challenging level. Both games focus on problem-solving and can also be played at home.

If students have completed their assessments and want to keep learning, My Numeracy is another great option. My Numeracy includes instructional videos and allows students to choose specific maths topics to focus on. Students can also earn trophies based on their learning time. It’s a great way to target areas for improvement and continue building confidence in maths.

In summary, we recommend Goat Maths for Foundation and Year 1 students, and Essential Assessment (including Sunset Maths, Jetpack Algebra and My Numeracy) for older students.

Yours sincerely,

The CHPS Math Captains
