Reading & Writing

To begin our school year we have been assessing students to understand their sound knowledge. As part of the Literacy program in Term 1, students will be looking at the following sounds:
Sounds we will have a focus on are:
- Short A, I, O
- FLSZ spelling rule (ff, ll, ss, zz)
- -all, -oll, -ull
- Digraphs
- -ce
- ge
- Split digraphs
- -es, -ed
- -ing
- Closed and open syllables
As part of our home learning, students will engage in reading decodable texts.
Over this term we will also enjoy books such as ‘The First Scientists’ by Corey Tutt, ‘The Shop Train’ by Josie Wowolla Boyle and ‘The Fabulous Friend Machine’ by Nick Bland.
During these units, the students will be exploring themes such as:
- Challenging stereotypes and omissions
- Innovation and ingenuity
- Geographic diversity
- Australian history
- Kindness and generosity
- Real friends vs virtual friends
- Trust and deception
For writing, children will be learning to write Information Reports, simple Narratives and they will be focusing on writing simple sentences correctly. We will continue to work on handwriting in both our reading and writing lessons.
