Bus Travellers

Please take note if your child travels on a bus to or from school.

Last week we held a Bus Traveller Meeting with students to discuss the importance of staying safe when travelling on buses. We talked about how to safely wait for the bus, travel on the bus and exit the bus.

We have received reports of students engaging in unsafe behaviour while waiting for the bus, as well as yelling and using inappropriate language while travelling.

With students from Foundation to Year 6 travelling on buses to and from Torquay College, it is important that all students understand their responsibility to behave safely and respectfully. We want every student to feel safe and comfortable when travelling on the bus, while also remembering that they are representing Torquay College and our school community whenever they are travelling.

We ask that you please take a moment to remind your child about the importance of bus travel safety, both when travelling to and from school and when using buses within our community.

Waiting for the Bus

  • Stay well away from the road and the curb while waiting for the bus.
  • Keep scooters and other belongings safely beside you.
  • Do not ride scooters around the bus stop or while waiting for the bus.
  • Wait calmly and follow the instructions of adults and bus staff.

Travelling on the Bus

  • Students must have a Youth Myki card and tap on and off the bus https://transport.vic.gov.au/news-and-resources/campaigns/travel-freeeeeeeee
  • Find a seat quickly and safely when boarding.
  • Remain seated for the entire journey.
  • Keep your belongings with you and ensure they are not blocking the aisle.
  • Use appropriate language.
  • Demonstrate appropriate behaviours.
  • Use a quiet voice and follow the instructions of the bus driver.

Getting Off the Bus

  • Exit the bus carefully and safely, without pushing or rushing.
  • Once you have left the bus, wait for the bus to move away before crossing the road.
  • Waiting until the bus has moved allows you to clearly see approaching vehicles and other traffic.
  • Always cross at a safe and appropriate crossing point and check carefully before crossing.

Thank you for helping us reinforce these important safety messages with your child. Working together, we can ensure that all of our students travel safely and confidently on buses.
