Reflection for the Week
The Feast of the Assumption - Friday 15th August 2025
The Feast of the Assumption, celebrated on August 15th, commemorates the belief that the Virgin Mary was taken body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life. This event is a significant feast day in the Catholic Church and is also celebrated by some other Christian denominations. It is a Holy Day of Obligation for Catholics, meaning they are required to attend Mass.
What is it?
The Assumption is the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus, did not experience bodily decay after death, but was taken directly into heaven.
Why is it important?
It highlights Mary's unique role in salvation history and her close relationship with Jesus.
How is it celebrated?
Many communities hold processions with statues of Mary, and attend Mass.
Historical context:
While the belief in the Assumption has been held for centuries, it was formally defined as a dogma of the Catholic Church by Pope Pius XII in 1950.
Public holiday:
The Feast of the Assumption is a public holiday in many countries, particularly in Europe.

Father in heaven,
may the faith you have given us
in your son, Jesus Christ, our brother,
and the flame of charity enkindled
in our hearts by the Holy Spirit,
reawaken in us the blessed hope
for the coming of your Kingdom.
May your grace transform us
into tireless cultivators of the seeds of the Gospel.
May those seeds transform from within both humanity and the whole cosmos
in the sure expectation
of a new heaven and a new earth,
when, with the powers of Evil vanquished,
your glory will shine eternally.
May the grace of the Jubilee
reawaken in us, Pilgrims of Hope,
a yearning for the treasures of heaven.
May that same grace spread
the joy and peace of our Redeemer
throughout the earth.
To you our God, eternally blessed,
be glory and praise for ever.
