Year 9 Pilot Project

Lumen Christi College’s Year 9 Pilot Project was held on Tuesday, 18 November and was a fantastic success, giving a select group of students the chance to explore real career pathways through hands-on and engaging activities. The program was designed to introduce students to practical industries that are in demand, while helping them build confidence in their own abilities.

Using a range of facilities across the campus, students rotated through five practical sessions. These included barista training, gardening, cyber security, hospitality, and trade assistant skills. Each session was delivered by experienced staff and industry professionals who guided students through real tasks conducted in the workplace. Students steamed milk and created simple coffees learning some artwork when pouring milk, they learned how to grow and maintain plants, explored the basics of digital safety, prepared and presented food, and gained experience using tools commonly found in trade environments.

The event provided valuable insights, new practical skills, and plenty of excitement. Most importantly, it allowed students to experience what real career pathways can look like in a supportive and enjoyable setting. The atmosphere across the campus was positive and energetic.

VET Spotlight

We warmly congratulate Tegan Thobaven in Year 12 who acompleted Certificate IV in Health Care. Since graduating she has remained an active member of Perth Medical Volunteers as a qualified Emergency Medical Responder, gaining real experience across a wide range of community events.

Her volunteer work has taken her to places she never expected, from the lively Perth Twilight Markets to the fast and unpredictable world of Junior Speedway cars. Through these events, Tegan has encountered many different injuries and medical situations, each one providing new learning opportunities and helping her grow in confidence. Working alongside Paramedic Students has been especially valuable. She has gained practical knowledge by observing patient assessments, asking questions, and picking up tips that only come from real situations.

Tegan often reflects on how meaningful her training at Health Science Hub has been. The Certificate IV course provided her with strong foundational skills and the chance to apply them through hands-on work experience. She has spoken highly of the support, the practical focus, and the opportunities that helped her transition from the classroom into real medical response settings.

Tegan’s journey shows how far determination and practical experience can take a student, and she continues to be a wonderful example to others who are considering a future in the health and emergency response fields.
