Learning Conversations 

Thank you to those families who attended our Learning Conversations on Tuesday. These provide a valuable connection between school and home, giving families insight into who their child is as a learner. This semester over 70% of families made an appointment to meet with their child’s teacher. Thank you for taking the time to engage in this conversation as we work together to set goals and support our learners.

Year 1

The Year 1 learners have been exploring the inquiry question, 'Are bugs useless?' Through hands on investigations, discussions, observations, and research, they have discovered that bugs play a vital role in our natural world. They have been learning about the many ways insects contribute to a healthy ecosystem, including pollinating plants, breaking down organic matter, providing food for other animals, and helping to maintain the balance of nature. As their understanding has grown, the learners have begun to appreciate that even the smallest creatures have an important purpose and make valuable contributions to our environment. 

As part of this inquiry, the Year 1 learners have also been developing their scientific observation skills by closely examining a variety of insects and identifying their key features. They have practised labelling diagrams and images using accurate scientific vocabulary and have learned to recognise that insects have three main body parts: the head, thorax, and abdomen. They have also explored the characteristics that make an animal an insect, including having six legs, a pair of antennae, and, in many cases, wings. 

Throughout this unit, the learners have asked thoughtful questions, shared their discoveries, and used their growing knowledge to compare and classify different insects. Their curiosity and enthusiasm have supported them in developing a deeper understanding of biodiversity and the important relationships that exist within our ecosystem, while strengthening their scientific vocabulary, observation skills, and appreciation for the living world around them.

Year 5

In Year 5, we have wrapped up our production after spending the first few weeks of the term refining our dances, preparing our costumes, and putting our best foot (or flipper!) forward. The learners thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to perform for our St Mary's community, and we are incredibly proud of each of them for stepping outside their comfort zones and giving their best on stage. 

A heartfelt thank you to all of our families for your support in helping the production run so smoothly. Your encouragement and assistance were greatly appreciated. 

We now look forward to the School Athletics Carnival on Monday, where our learners will have the opportunity to showcase their athletic skills, sportsmanship, and House spirit.
