CHILDREN'S UNIVERSITY

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Our students have the opportunity to be involved in an exciting program: ‘Children’s University Australia’ (CU).

CU aims to provide high quality ‘learning activities’ for children aged between 7 and 14 years, engaging the wider community as learning partners in this process.  An important principle of CU is that participation is voluntary – children can choose their own learning activities.

Activities must take place outside the normal school day during lunch, after school, weekends and holidays. All CU learning is designed to inspire children to think about their futures with a greater knowledge of the careers and professions that they could aspire to.

Students enrolled in Charles Darwin Children’s University will be issued with a ‘Passport to Learning’ which records their individual learning journey. Each time they participate in a Children’s University Learning Activity, they will receive a ‘stamp’ in their ‘Passport to Learning’. After 30 hours of learning, the children are rewarded for their participation with certificates at a graduation ceremony to be held at Charles Darwin University in November. Information on the hours, and award levels, can be found in the Passport to Learning.

Participating students have access to activities at school, online and also in the wider community (Learning Destinations). These activities have been validated by Charles Darwin Children’s university-trained staff as providing good quality learning opportunities. Once your child becomes a member, a full list of Learning Destinations and online activities can be found by logging on to the CU Portal here www.cuaportal.com.

Our school has been given the opportunity to participate in the program free of charge.

Children’s University is not compulsory. The activities are all voluntary and the children choose what to do and when, and the learning always has a link to something they could do at a ‘grown up’ university.

If your child would like to become a member of CU for 2024 please complete the online form by the end of February. Students are enrolled once we receive this form. They will receive their Passport to Learning at school.

If you are unable to complete the form online, please see the CU coordinator at your school to provide you with a hard copy form to be returned to them.

School Drop Off & Pick Up

Please note, at school drop-off and pick-up your family is safest when using the designated parking and stopping zones marked on the map below. Thank you for modelling road safety by using the parking zones and zebra crossings to and from school.

Kiss and Go (yellow on map) – Pull in, leave your car running while your child exits the car and then drive on. Adults remain in their vehicle.

Parking (blue on map) – Pull in, turn your vehicle off and walk your child to the zebra crossing or into school. When driving away, please follow the direction of traffic (no U-turns). No parking is permitted in the visitor parks on Kramer Street between 7:45- 8:30 am and 2:30-3:15pm. The Kramer Street visitor carpark on the south side of the school is available between 8:30am and 2:30pm only. This is a safety measure as we currently have cars backing out over the footpath as students are walking past. We have been advised that the council intend to do some spot checks to enforce the no stopping zone in Kramer Street. Please do not park in the bus zone or along the yellow line

Zebra Crossing (black & white on map)  Staff supervise the crossing from 8.00am before school and after school.

Canteen

*** Please note, due to circumstances out of our control, the canteen will be closed next week 27/02/2024 - 1/03/2024 ***

In 2024 the canteen will be open Tuesday - Friday. To order, download the School24 app and use School ID: 2513 7963. Orders are due in by 8.00am each day.

Please remember that all canteen orders require a bag. Separate bags are needed for first and second break. You can purchase paper or reusable bags through the School24 app when ordering. Please check the 'bags' section of the menu. Students are also welcome to use a lunch bag purchased from elsewhere or brought form home - make sure to clearly label it though.

Narelle in the canteen is always looking for volunteers to help out, particularly from 8.30-10.30am and 12.00-1.00pm, but any time you can give would be much appreciated. To register your interest please email Narelle at lwls.canteen@ntschools.net.
