Middle School Student House Leadership - Applications Open for 2027
Applications are now open for Year 8 Student House Leaders for Semester 1, 2027. Students need to read the application information; applications are due on Wednesday 11 November at 9.00am. Students must be endorsed by a teacher to complete their application, and email their submission to Essie Hoggart by the due date. We look forward to meeting our future leaders!
Welcome to House Soccer, 2026!
Students from all Houses are invited to come and play a friendly game of soccer from Weeks 3 to 5 on Fridays at Second Break on the Bottom Green. It’s a great chance to have a run around, share some House pride and compete for points towards the Middle School House Cup! Sign up using the link in your email or the student bulletin. Got questions? See Essie Hoggart, Tom Smith or your Student House Leaders.
Hobart City Mission Middle School Donation Drive
Last term, the Student Voice Council visited the Hobart City Mission’s Safe Sleep Space, a refuge for Hobart’s homeless. Inspired to help, the students invited Teasha McInnes from the Mission to take the Year 7 & 8 students on a virtual tour of the space, so that they too could understand the work that the City Mission does. Further to that, the Student Voice Council invite students to donate non-perishable food, toiletries and new underwear and bedding that will be gifted to the Mission.
Each Key Class has a list of the most needed items, and we invite students to bring something along to help Hobart’s most vulnerable. House donation tubs will be located in the library, with donations accepted up until Week 6. Please direct any questions or queries to Essie Hoggart.
Year 8 Independent Project
On Thursday 19 November, students in Year 8 will showcase their Independent Projects in The Farrall Centre between 11am and 1pm. Parents and members of the community are warmly invited to attend during this time.
Students have been working on developing a new practical skill for the last 15 weeks. They have been documenting their learning journey, and they are now ready to share this journey - answer questions about their achievements, the challenges that they faced, and what they learnt about themselves throughout the process.
The emphasis on this project has been student agency; we encourage students to welcome new experiences, act with courage, and to strive for mastery of new skills by seeking feedback and continuously experimenting and extending themselves.
We would like to thank the mentors who have supported the students throughout this project, and congratulate the Year 8 students for their willingness to ‘step out of their comfort zone’, and for their adaptability and persistence. The wide range of individual projects on display is testament to the curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm for learning demonstrated by the Year 8 cohort.
Year 7 Connections Ecology Excursion
Penn and Fry: Friday 30 October
Mott and Walker: Friday 13 November
Oats and Backhouse: Friday 27 November
To connect with our Science Ecology unit, students will spend some time at Knocklofty Reserve as part of the Connections program.
On their allocated day, staff and students will depart from School at 11.30am by bus and head to Knocklofty Reserve. Students will identify a range of flora and take observations of the site until 1.00pm.
Students will then walk to the Train Park for lunch, before returning to school by 2.30pm.
Students should wear sports' uniform, including sturdy sandshoes. They must bring a hat, sunscreen, lunch and a drink bottle. Students should also bring any personal medications. As this trip is away from School in the field, please ensure that students have packed plenty to eat and drink (no lunch orders for second break).
Students will be given a clipboard and a pencil and will work in table groups to undertake the field work throughout the day. If you have questions, please contact Nell Henning.
Absentees
If your child will be absent from school for the day please advise the Middle School Office (phone: 6210 2235, or email: middleschooloffice@friends.tas.edu.au). We appreciate your support in this process.
