Maths Treasure Boxes

Next week we will be bringing back the Maths Treasure Boxes!

To support maths engagement beyond the classroom, students in Years 1–4 will be taking home a Maths Treasure Box. This resource is an effective way to make learning interactive and accessible at home.

What is a Maths Treasure Box?

A Maths Treasure Box is a container filled with various items and materials that encourage mathematical thinking. The Maths Treasure Boxes contain resources that prompt children to explore numbers, shapes, patterns, and problem-solving.

When it is your child’s turn, they will be able to take the Maths Treasure Box home for one week and during this week we encourage your child to select one or two activities to complete each day. After each activity has been completed, we ask that you support your child in recording their experiences and thinking in the journal that is provided in the box.

Once the Maths Treasure Box is returned back to class, the expectation is that your children would choose an activity that they have attempted at home and share their learning about it with the whole class.

Why Use a Maths Treasure Box?

  • Encourages Play-Based Learning – Children naturally learn through play, and a treasure box makes maths feel more like an adventure rather than a lesson.
  • Boosts Problem-Solving Skills – Hands-on activities encourage children to think critically and find creative solutions to challenges.
  • Makes Learning Fun – Turning maths into an exciting game or mystery can increase engagement and motivation.
  • Promotes Independent Learning – A treasure box provides self-guided opportunities for children to explore maths concepts at their own pace.

We hope that the Maths Treasure Boxes will provide a collaborative and enriching maths experience for you and your child!
