Systemic Knowledge

Geography - Year 1 My Place and Space

In our Year 1 Systemic Knowledge unit, My Place and Space, students will explore the places around them and how people use and care for different environments. They  will learn that places can have Aboriginal and European names and can be represented in different ways, including maps and labelled drawings. Students will investigate the difference between natural features, such as trees, rivers and mountains, and constructed features, such as buildings, roads and bridges. They will also explore how places change over time and how people can help care for important places and environments.

Throughout the unit, students will develop their geographical skills by asking questions about places, locating Australia, Victoria and familiar locations on simple maps, and using directional language such as north, south, east and west. They will also collect and represented information through drawings, labelled maps and simple tables to show the features of places and how people use them.

Technology - Year 1 Growing Plants for Food

In our Year 1 Systemic Knowledge unit, Growing Plants for Food, students will explore how plants grow and how they are used to make products that people need and use every day. They will learn what plants need to grow, including water, sunlight, soil, space and care, and investigate where different plants are grown, such as farms, orchards, market gardens and forests. Students will explore the stages of plant growth, from seed to harvest, and discover how plants are processed to create useful products.

Biological Science- Year 2 Exploring the Amazing Variety of Living Things

This term, Year 2 students are exploring biodiversity and the amazing variety of living things in our world. They will learn how plants and animals have special features that help them survive in different environments. Students will observe, compare and classify living things, investigate their features and share their scientific discoveries. They will also explore how scientists and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples develop knowledge about living things and recognise the importance of caring for Australia's unique plants, animals and environments. Through these investigations, students will discover why biodiversity is important and how we can all help protect living things and their habitats.

Technology - Year 2: Animals Give Us Things We Use

This term, students will explore how people care for animals and use animal products in everyday life. They will learn about the different products we get from animals, such as milk, eggs and wool, and how these products are collected and processed. Students will investigate how farm animals are raised, what they need to stay healthy, and how farmers care for their animals. They will also explore different types of farms, the impact of farming on the environment, and how food choices can be influenced by culture, beliefs and individual needs.

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL): Year 1 & 2

We will continue to work through the Resilience, Rights, and Respectful Relationships Program (RRRR). This program supports schools in promoting and modelling respect, positive attitudes, and behaviours. It teaches our children how to build healthy relationships, resilience, and confidence.

Using the RRRR Program, and with support from Open Parachute and Zones of Regulations, we aim to help build positive social interactions across our class and the whole school community.
