National Recycling Week: 9 - 13 November
Throughout week 6, we will be acknowledging National Recycling week at Bell PS, through a variety of activities and classroom challenges. Here are some ways you can support us and help make National Recycling Week a huge success!
We need your Trash!!
Sustainability Reps and Leaders will be running activities using recycled materials, during breaks on Friday 13th to celebrate the end of National Recycling Week.
We are looking for donations of:
- Empty 2 litre soft drink bottles
- Empty milk cartons
- Plastic jars or containers WITH lids
- Materials that might be used to doctorate items - old/partially used sticker sheets, unused/half used craft supplies
- Advertising magnets
- Please ensure that any products that have contained food or drink are well rinsed out before donating.
- Donation items can be dropped off in week 5 (week beginning 2/11) to tubs outside the Wellbeing offices in the Learning Centre.
Donate books for neighbouring schools
During National Recycling week, we are taking donations of non-fiction texts to pass on to other schools in our network.
- Book donations can be left at the front office in the tubs marked “Book Donations” from November 9th to 13th.
- Please ensure any books donated are in good condition and appropriate for Primary School aged students.
Most government primary schools rely heavily on revenue from Scholastic orders to fund purchases for their libraries. Bell PS has a wide range of books, multiple copies of popular series, and regularly updates and stocktakes its catalogue.
Did you know that 15% of your Scholastic spend goes back to the school in credit?
For some schools not far from Bell, their libraries *and students* are crying out for new books. Families and carers may not be able to purchase Scholastic orders, meaning their school libraries look very different. At one nearby school, the library received just $40 in Scholastic credit last year.
This does not mean that the students at this school do not love to read! Staff regularly take students to the library throughout the week so they can return and borrow books. Students are reading multiple novels a week and borrowing picture storybooks to read to younger siblings. Twenty per cent of the students attend lunchtime library clubs. These are small but hardworking libraries!
What these libraries need most are non-fiction books. These texts are significantly more expensive than fiction. At the same neighbouring school, 80% of its non-fiction texts were purchased over ten years ago.
Any donations will be used to stock school libraries and create resource collections to enrich Science and Humanities learning. Duplicate books will be used to create packages for families in need and students in out-of-home care.
Collect your cans
Did you know that your empty cans and bottles can be turned into money for our school?
When you deposit your empty cans and bottles at any CDS north refund point, you can opt to donate your refund to Bell Primary School. Ten cents might not seem like much but every little bit helps and all donations go towards sustainability projects at our school!
