MIRBOO NORTH – NEW GYMNASIUM HOPE!

You may have seen on the social media pages this week, that the Labor Minister for Eastern Victoria – Tom McIntosh visited MNSC & MNPS, specifically to tour our combined schools’ and community gymnasium on Monday 18th August. This visit was put in motion by Ms Burke – our Middle School Coordinator and passionate PE teacher, who is wanting to build on the previous campaigning which Mirboo North community members have been part of for many years now.
Our sitting member Mr Danny O’Brien has long been a supporter for the redevelopment of our gym and has also spoken with numerous Labor Ministers about our predicament. So, on Monday it was wonderful to see how keen and supportive Tom McIntosh was about seeing this key asset improve – and soon!
We are seeking to investigate and advocate for a new and / or upgraded gym for the children, teens and adults in our community. So many sporting clubs do and could continue to use this facility if it’s standards were updated! As you probably know, this is the only indoor space in the Mirboo North & District community capable of hosting different sports and indoor recreation activities, and it was built in the 1970s – initially constructed half with community donations and half with school (DE) funds.
Tom spoke to our Secondary & Primary School Captains first up, and got their perspective about the issues we have faced around this sub-standard resource. The students represented themselves brilliantly and confidently spoke on behalf of their student bodies. We ended with a chat on the Senior School couches and a cuppa too. We also welcomed our supporters Councillor Brad Snell from the South Gippsland Shire and Ruth Rogan, Executive Officer from the Mirboo North and District Foundation, who were able to provide valuable perspectives on this long-standing plight.
If you can, please show your interest and positive comments by ‘liking’ MP Tom McIntosh’s post on his FB / Instagram pages and even share! Mr Snell and Ms Dauphin have also made sure that this is visible to our school community on our ‘socials’ so please – make some noise and help us advocate! As Tom McIntosh discussed with our students on Monday; things only change and ‘happen’ when you stand up and advocate for the things you really want and believe in!
