Attendance Message
As spring approaches, the warmer weather and flowers in bloom can make it inviting outside — but keeping school attendance is equally important to your child's education. Each school day is a building on what they learned before, and missing several classes can make it harder for students to keep up and feel secure in their studies.
We know spring means spring allergies, and we truly don't want you to ignore your child when he or she is genuinely sick. But for the days when the sun is out and the air is soft, getting into that school rhythm — with a wee sniffle or two here and there aside — can be such a game-changer.
If your child must take a day off, be sure to mark their absence on COMPASS, send an email to keith.kerstjens@education.vic.gov.au, or phone 56679000.
Let's collaborate to maintain strong attendance and provide each student with the best opportunity to do well this term.
The German Poetry competition is back!!!!!
Last week students from Year 7-9 took part in the German poetry competition. All students did an excellent job with their poem, it was extremely difficult to choose our winner. We believe everyone who gave it a shot is a winner, but we had to choose three students in each year level to walk away with some Haribo and medals.
The winners were
Year 7
Marlon Archipow
Alice Haw
Reagan Selsby
Year 8
Zoe Norwood
Ella Williams
Ryleigh Cardona
Year 9

Community Reminder: Safety Around School Pickup Zones 🚸
We’re asking all families to support a safe and respectful environment during school drop-off and pick-up times.
There have been ongoing concerns about unsafe parking, congestion, and driver behaviour in and around the school carparks and pickup areas. Some parents have notified us of their concerns for student safety and that they have contacted local authorities, and as a result, the Shire Parking Officers and Victoria Police are likely to undertake more regular patrols around school zones.
We urge all families to:
· Follow parking signs and road rules
· Avoid stopping in pick-up zones or blocking driveways and cars already parked
· Drive slowly and with care near children
· Show patience and respect to others in these busy areas
Let’s work together to make our school community safe for everyone — especially our students.
Thank you for your cooperation and support.

Mirboo North's Big Freeze
It took VOS weeks of planning and preparation to get all the merchandise and to finalise the plan for the Mirboo North Secondary College’s Big Freeze event last term. We sold beanies, stress balls, socks, key rings and pens, along with other items, at recess every day for two weeks leading up to the event. All merch was provided by Fight MND and MND Australia.
On the 3rd of July students and staff were encouraged to dress up as famous Aussie Icons. It was great to see so many people participate, we saw lots of sports players, Prime Ministers, Lifeguards, Bunnings workers and ACDC enthusiasts show up. At lunchtime the event kicked off with the teachers participating by being dunked first, followed by the VOS students, all of whom were given a hot chocolate afterwards as a reward for their efforts.
I think the event was a huge hit, with the school raising over $2000 for MND and Fight MND research.

The BIG FREEZE 2025 at Mirboo North Secondary College!!!!
VOS (Voice of Students) wanted to support The BIG FREEZE 11 as one of the organisations that the school would donate towards. The planning for this event started at the beginning of term 2. It is amazing how long things take to organise and make an event happen. The students wanted to use a dunk tank, but they were a high price to hire!
Then the thinking caps went on.. water slide, water slide into a tub, a long waterslide??… Until it was decided that it was safest to just sit on a seat and have two buckets of ice water poured over your head!! Simple, but cold enough and practical to demonstrate our support for MND.
The FIGHT MND organisation was contacted, and they sent the college merchandise to sell. Items such as BIG FREEZE 11 beanies, socks and caps were sold, and we raised $500. We also set up an online sponsorship. This raised $1,281 for research into what causes Motor Neurone Disease.
The MND organisation was also contacted, and they sent the school a box of merchandise to sell. Items such as socks, beanies, caps, bucket hats, key rings, pins, pens, stress balls and drink bottles. A total of $475 was raised! This money goes towards the families affected by MND to support them with a range of equipment and support services.
The planning continued, finalising who the participants would be. Staff were very keen to support the event as well as the VOS team who many of them willingly said “Yes” to getting dunked!
We needed ice; 12 bags were donated by Evans Petroleum of Leongatha. Thank you, John Schelling, the Mayor of South Gippsland Shire for generously sponsoring our event!

The students and staff all crowded around the participants and watched the big splash go over each participant. This raised a chant and a "One, two three!" then "Splash!" for each volunteer!! The buckets were enthusiastically poured over by Molly Mills and Mr Corbin, and a few ring-ins along the way! A hot chocolate and a kitkat bar was offered by Alex and Reagan (VOS members) to the participants as some immediate warmth to recover from the freezing splash!
Grace Schill, our VOS representative was the master of ceremonies and did a great job. Mrs Borg, Mr Williams and Jade Jackson, a VOS representative chose the best dressed AUSSIE ICON winners! They were all amazing!

Year 8- Jeremy Plowman was Sharon

Year 10- Charley Jennings was Ned Kelly

We also sold hot chocolate on the day and raised $60. It was a great event with many generous merchandise purchases. The spirit of support was present and the atmosphere on the day was one of respect and good will.
I would like to thank everyone for their support and kindness and hope we have all learnt something new about MND that we did not know before this event. Raising awareness of the disease and knowing that there is no cure is devastating, but we must be positive and help those affected and support the researchers to find a cure.
Thank you, VOS for your time and energy to make it happen.
Thank you, Mirboo North Secondary College students, staff and families, for your support. You have all made a difference!
