LS2 Seniors: Exploring the Power of Power
This term, we are excited to begin our new RE/Inquiry topic, Power! Students will investigate different sources of power and explore how it can be created, transformed and connected to bring about change.
We have started our learning with a series of immersive experiences, including exploring a marble run, also known as a Rube Goldberg-style machine. As students design, construct and test their experiments, they are beginning to think deeply about scientific concepts such as gravity, buoyancy, friction and heat transfer.
Through hands-on investigations, students are developing their ability to question, predict, problem-solve, collaborate and reflect on how different forms of power interact and influence outcomes.
It has been a fantastic start to the term, and we look forward to seeing where our investigations, questions, and discoveries take us throughout Term 4!

Welcome Back to Term 4! ☀️📝
Welcome back to Term 4! We hope all our families had a wonderful and relaxing school holiday break. It has been lovely to see the students return to school refreshed, excited and ready for another busy term of learning. It has been lovely hearing all about the wonderful adventures they had over the holidays and seeing the smiles as they’ve reunited with their friends and teachers.
To begin the term, students have been reflecting on their holiday experiences and writing a holiday recount. Students have been sharing about what they did, who they spent time with, and what their favourite moments were and using these experiences to create a recount. They have been learning to organise their ideas in the correct sequence and include details about what happened, where it happened, who was involved and how they felt.
Students have also been working on using time connectives such as first, next, then and last to help their writing flow in chronological order. It has been wonderful to hear students enthusiastically share their holiday stories with their classmates and see these experiences come to life through their writing.
As we begin Term 4, we are looking forward to another exciting term filled with learning, new experiences and opportunities for students to grow. We can't wait to see what the final term of the year brings! 🤩

Visual Arts News
This term we begin Visual Arts with great enthusiasm and anticipation knowing our 2026 Art Show is around the corner. Our artists have been very busy building their craftsmanship as they come to the final stages of completing their 2D and 3D pieces for our special school event. This semester they have also been studying famous artists like Vincent van Gogh to express the concept of ‘change’ for example, via emotions through colour and lines. Enlarged sunflowers with printing through to blending techniques have been created by LS 1 & 2 Juniors. Whilst LS2 seniors have experimented with van Gogh’s ‘impasto’ techniques on seasonal backgrounds to create 3D effects. LS1 students studied Paul Cezanne’s artwork and have carefully observed fruits from different angles literally, to make the ordinary extraordinary, whilst LS 3 Juniors have been inspired by marine conservation and creatively transformed lids into sea creatures.
Art Show News
With our Art Show soon approaching we are keen to also showcase the talents of our parents/carers of current SFS students. If you would like to participate there is still time! We look forward to viewing the wonderful artistic skills and talents of our SFS parents and carers!
Christmas Art Competition
Just a gentle reminder that the HOLT Annual Christmas Card Competition closes next Friday 16th October, 2026 (next week!). The theme is ‘Your Vision of Christmas’. Some visual examples for designing the card may be illustrating a sunny image of Christmas in Australia by the beach or a snowy winter
wonderland.
The winning artist will have their design on Cassandra’s front cover of her official 2026 Christmas card and receive a $100 gift voucher from Officeworks.
If students are keen to enter this year and would like support with sharing their talents beyond our school, they are welcome to share their ideas with me. Students who would like me to hand deliver their entries to Cassandra Fernando MP’s office are asked to hand them to me by next Thursday, 15th October, 2026. Thank you to all students who are participating in this exciting competition!
Enjoy the start of term and until next time, keep on making the spark in your art grow!

GRADE 5 BIKE EDUCATION – CYCLING SKILLS AND SIMULATIONS
Grade 5 students will begin their Bike Education Program later this term IN Week 5. They will remain on school grounds completing cycling skills and simulations.
All parents will need to give permission and complete your child’s bike and helmet safety check. Also please indicate on nForma if your child does not have a bicycle and helmet. The bike and helmet safety check will need to be completed, signed and returned to Home Group teachers by next Friday October 16th. This only needs to be completed for students who have their own bike/helmet.

TERM 4 SWIMMING
Swimming has begun!! Thanks to all the parents that ensured their child was prepared for their swimming lesson. It made the office ladies' job much easier. Thank you also to parents who assisted in the Junior changerooms. Please remember that only the parents I have organised will be allowed to enter and assist in the changerooms.
Swimming timetables have been uploaded onto the nForma permission form as an attachment. Please print it off and ensure you have it available at home.
Next week’s swimming lessons are:
- Monday – LS1 Seniors, LS1 Juniors and LS3 Juniors
- Tuesday – LS3 Seniors, LS2 Seniors and LS2 Juniors
Students will need to wear their bathers under their uniform (either summer or sports whichever is easier for them to change in and out of) and bring a bag with their towel, undergarments and thongs. Could we please ask parents to ensure all clothes taken to swimming are clearly labelled with your child’s name including their uniform. It’s extremely hard to work out who clothes belong to, when found, if student names are not on them.
Please ensure your child is prepared for their swimming lesson so our office staff do not need to use their valuable time ringing parents and asking them to bring swimming gear.
Parents please note you are welcome to attend Casey Race to view your child’s lesson but photographs and videos are not allowed and only parents who have been contacted by me, are able to assist in the junior change rooms.
A reminder to parents that swimming is an important part of the PE curriculum and all students are expected to attend. It’s imperative that students know how to keep themselves safe around water. If there is a medical reason your child cannot attend a session, they will then remain at school in another Learning Space.
Any queries please don’t hesitate to contact me.
