CAPTAIN'S CORNER

SENIOR CAPTAIN

As we inch closer and closer to exam period, it’s full steam ahead for the Year 12s as they buckle down for the final straight. The end of Term 3 holidays weren’t what you’d usually expect, with students coming into school to sit their Practice Exams under proper conditions from Monday 29 September to Thursday 2 October. McKinnon is fortunate enough to experience exams before students sit them, with VCAA supervisors attending the practices, giving Year 12s a glimpse into how everything runs. We sincerely thank all teachers and the principal team for going to the effort to prepare us for what is the busiest and most important part of our schooling.

On that note, high school is unfortunately coming to an end for us Year 12s - a bittersweet but exciting time as we don’t know what lies ahead in our futures. Week 2 of Term 4 is the last official week for the Year 12s, with the annual (Wo)ManKinnon dance-off between students and staff on Monday, Dress Up Day on Wednesday and the infamous Year 12 Assembly and Valedictory Dinner on Thursday, marking our graduation.

While it is a time of celebration, it is also a time of reflection as we cast our minds back to Year 7 in 2020 as we all had a marvelous start to high school before COVID struck. Over time, we’ve made lasting friendships, learned at both East and McKinnon Rd campuses, been on numerous camps together and now, have endured our final year of school. So, a huge congratulations to the Class of 2025 on making it this far and good luck with exams!

As for the rest of the school, there is an exciting term ahead. There is plenty to look forward to, with the Big Band Bash night on Thursday 23 October, the Year 7 Zoo excursions, Year 10 Outdoor Ed Surf Camp and the Senior Art Show, just to name a few. Make sure you get involved to make the most of the final term of 2025 and remember that stepping out of your comfort zone can lead to wonderful things.

Happy Term 4!

In true McKinnon fashion, we’ve got another exciting event lined up; the Year 9 Wisdom & Service Open Night. Whilst settling back in, it’s become evident that everyone’s been working hard on their exhibits for it. This special night is on Thursday 23 October 2025, running from 4:30pm to 6:00pm. We’ll all be presenting our plans to help the community - from teaching certain skills to the younger generation to running food banks for people who suffer from food insecurity. It’s certainly inspiring to see my peers hope and plan for positive changes, both big and small, therefore I know our open night will be enjoyable. Drop by to see what our ideas are!!

As the year wraps up, it’s our final term, so the captains are finalising changes they’ve been working on making this entire year, aiming to achieve all our goals we’ve set. Being a member of the leadership team here is such an unforgettable experience. Everyone in the team has formed such a strong community, and I look forward to every meeting we have. I would definitely recommend trying out for captaincy roles if you’re going into Year 9 or 12 next year! From workshops to meetings, we’ve all grown truly as a team, and we’re so grateful for the honour of being trusted to be McKinnon’s captains of 2025.
